UPH Question staying at Dolphin

I know that you can 'shave' off the first or last day of an unlimited park hopper when you stay at a Disney resort, but I was wondering if you could do the same if you are staying at the Dolphin?

I'm curious as to what 'shave off' means. We're arriving quite late to the Dolphin, and I was wondering if I could by a UPH the next day, thereby saving a day/night off the price.

Yes, you absolutely can do just that.

Can I purchase them in advance or do I need to wait til I check in?

You have to wait till you check in since your room is separate from your UPH. There is a Disney desk at both the Swan and the Dolphin where you can purchase your tickets. If you just want a regular park hopper you can get that anywhere, but the UPH requires onsite stay. Our room wasn't ready when we went the end of June, but we were still able to get our passes very easily upon verifying that we were staying at the Swan. Yes, you can take off the first and last day of your park hopper with no trouble what-so-ever!
