Upgrading to APs - how does it work?

*Edited post to ask a new question. :)

*We are getting our tickets (3dayhoppers) through either Costco travel or Getawaytoday. How does it work to upgrade to APs? Do we just pay the difference for an AP? How does Disney know how much we paid for our tickets? If they are "discounted" is the discount price or full price applied to the AP?

----Old Question----We are most likely buying another package through COSTCO travel for this June, but since we now LIVE (:cool1:) in California we also want APs.

During our upcoming trip the APs we are going to get would be blacked out a few days. So when can/should we upgrade and how does that work?

AFTER you use your MM.. they are not available to AP holders unless you stay onsite.

AFTER whatever the blackout dates on your trip are so you won't have to pay blackout fees.

and MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL BEFORE the parks close on the day you park hopper expires or you are out of luck.

So I would have to pay for my day if were to upgrade on a day that was blacked out?

Actually no, you won't need to. On the day you upgrade you can stay and use your AP to hop just like it's a regular day.

As soon as possible... Then you cam get the AP discount in the stores and restaurants! ;)

Yes, that is the tradeoff...

On the one had you want to use the MM on your parkhopper ticket and visit the parks any day you wish (APs have some days blocked out) but you also want the discount on dining and merchandise.

So putting that together, use the MM early before you upgrade, delay merchandise purchases and expensive sit down meals until later in the trip after you upgrade, and upgrade to the AP sometime in the middle when you will not be blocked out. :)

I edited my OP so this is just a "back to the top" post... :)

Thanks for the answers so far.

When you upgrade you pay the difference in cost between what you paid and what the AP costs. So you most likely loose the discount. On very rare occasions people have gotten away with not paying the full difference. Just don't count on that.

Disneyland policy is that you lose the discount. You get credit for *what you paid*.

When we upgraded our 5 day tickets from our Costco package (this is back in Sept '07) we got the amount of the pre-purchase online price of those tickets credited for the upgrade.

You get credit for the online prepurchase price. Costco packages are actually made through Walt Disney Travel, just with the added Costco perks (AAA too).

Thanks for the info! We are just going with APs right off the bat and take advantage of the discounts during our stay.
