Upgrading to AP using discounted tickets

We were planning on letting our APs expire in March and renew when we go again, probably sometime in Summer or Fall. With the price increase I’m still working out the value for us to get APs again, but if I do I’m wondering if it’s worth purchasing discounted tickets through Get Away Today now. When I go to upgrade at the ticket booth will they apply the value of the ticket (their current cost for a 3 day hopper for example) or the amount I paid, which would potentially be less. Anyone have experience with this?

Officially, the policy at Disneyland is that you pay the difference between the actual price you paid and the full price of the Annual Pass, if they cannot verify the price you paid for the ticket, then it is whatever price the company your purchased them from paid. Now, they have made exceptions to this in the past, but given the elimination of renewal discounts, I think you are really taking a gamble here and one that may see you spending even more money than you would have otherwise.

Thanks smartlabelprint and cmwade77 for the input. Since I’m not 100% we are going again this year after our passes expire I’m just going to wait and accept the price increase if we do. With all the talk about more changes to the AP structure later in 2018 who knows if they’ll still work for our vacation needs/budget so I’m going to just put it out of my mind for now and reevaluate if we decide to go again later this year.
