you MUST do it BEFORE your ticket is used up, and within 14days of first using it...

That's not quite true.

1- You can upgrade a stand-alone (non-WDW Resort Package) ticket AS LATE AS close-of-business on the SAME DAY that a ticket's last asset has been used.

2- A ticket that was purchased as part of the WDW Resort package can be upgraded even after it has been all used up, even days before.

And, in both case 1 and 2 above (as you said,) you must do any upgrade no later than 14 days following that ticket's first use.

I plan to upgrade my husband and my tickets in August as we plan to head back down in November for Food & Wine and then head back next Spring for a week. I had planned to go to DTD to do the upgrade and purchase TIW but everyone here says to go to a Park before upgrading. Could someone explain why to me? I bought the tickets with a package on WDW's site if that matters.

Because the tickets will reflect a discounted rate until you enter the park to use them which then makes the ticket worth the current gate price. This will save you money and cost less to do the upgrade.

The last WDW ticket price increase was Feb. 22, 2015. If you booked your resort package on or after that date, then your tickets are currently valued equal to gate price and you can go ahead with your AP upgrade at DTD. But if you booked your resort package BEFORE Feb 22nd, you were charged the old ticket rate. And in that case, when you went to upgrade to AP at DTD (if done before using your ticket to enter a theme park) you would owe for the price increase plus the AP upgrade cost. Simply entering a theme park first before upgrading, using your ticket, would raise the value of your ticket to current gate price (called price-bridging) and you'd only owe for the AP upgrade.

This upgrade rule applies only to WDW tickets from indirect sources, which are: WDW resort package tickets, Disney Store WDW tickets, and third-party WDW tickets from authorized vendors such as AAA, UCT, Maple Leaf. This rule does not apply if you bought WDW tickets directly from Disney in person or online, and not connected with a resort stay. Those direct Disney sources of WDW tickets would NOT be qualified for price-bridging. In those situations, you would owe the ticket price increase(s), if upgrading in any way.

Sorry to jump in on this thread, but could someone please give me some advice?
Currently have a 14 night booking with 6 day hoppers and FD.
Our plans are 14 night at Disney, then 5 at Cabanana Bay, then 7 night Fantasy cruise. this is all booked.
Ok we arrive at Caribbean Beach Dec 20th and deprt Jan 3rd. I booked 6 day hoppers & thought if we wanted some more park days will add one or 2 days whilst there.
After the cruise which will be Jan 16th we are thinking of staying in another Disney resort for 4 nights before flying back to Australia on the 20th Jan.
My question is do you think it would be better to upgrade to a annual pass? I believe we can do this on our fist park day.
Because I will have to buy more park tickets for the Jan 16-20th part of the trip, we initially thought 3 days to finish off the trip.
I have no idea how much or how to work out the difference in pricing.
Also can I still book Fast passes for 2nd part of the trip , if I don't have tickets?

1. Possibly... see if you can purchase the 14-day (or 21-day) WDW ticket available in the UK.

(AFAIK, you don't have to actually be from the UK to buy and use those tickets.)
