DH and I have had a Queen size bed for about 7 years (before that it was a Full size), but nearly every time we vacation we get a King size. We've finally decided it's time for a King at home!

Any recommendations for a good mattress? I'm curious about the Sleep Number Bed (I need a very firm mattress) but it's so expensive. If you love your mattress, please share the brand and style, and why you love it. TIA!

We bought a king mattress from Sears.com
We got it without trying it out, and it has turned out just great for us. The reason we decided to do this is we bought a twin from them (also sight-unseen) for our guest room and it was fabulous so we thought we'd get that one. Well, that one wasn't stocked anymore, so we picked another that sounded good. I think I prefer the twin, but the king is good too.

I've heard that you generally can't tell if your body really likes a mattress without a few days sleep, so even going and lying on them in the store doesn't do that much, though I suppose you can reject some.

My parents have a Select Comfort (pre-sleep number name) and they LOVE the mattress but hated the company. Maybe with the name change the company is better. The mattress is going on 15-20 years now, I would think, so it is probably worth the money. Spring mattresses don't last that long, generally.

For me, the biggest benefit of going with Sears is the mattress + box spring + delivery was $600. (It was a sale time.) We did NOT get the cheapest available, but I felt like that was a good enough price that if I hated it, I could get rid of it in a year or so; but turns out we love it.

And having the room on the king mattress is FABULOUS.

We got our last bed at Sears as well. I think it's a Serta. We tried out a lot of beds, including Sleep Number and Temperpedic (at other stores) before we decided on a mattress. DH and I had different wants and had to compromise (he wanted soft and I wanted more firm) We ended up with a nice pillowtop that I'm loving.

Sleep Number mattresses come in different amounts of cushion over the air mattress part. Only the most expensive was all that comfortable to us. And it's just too pricey.
Temperpedic was awful. Felt we couldn't move and the edges (we're edge sleepers) were not supportive enough.

Really....just keep trying out mattresses and see what you like. Lie in them a while, move around in them, sit on them. You'll figure it out.

And don't forget, when you move from queen to king you may need to buy a new bed as well.

We loved the mattresses at Coronado Springs Resort & when we decided to get one we went with one like that.

We love it!

Firm but perfect & our backs love it too!

We call it our best decision ever!

Sealy encore plush from the disney collection.

Cinderella custom designed it was $1400 for the King set & worth it!

Serta I series. Ours is a spring mattress with a layer of memory foam and cooling gel firm... had it for over two years and still as good as day 1. also has a 25 year warranty.
The I series is inclusive of their foam mattress and traditional spring with foam tops... they have 3 spring mattress that I am aware of as I mentioned above we have the firm..... it is firm but has a nice feeling unlike some that are sleeping on a board also the cooling gel does work... nice in the summer but can be a little cold in the winter as it takes a long time warm up... move and it is all over...but far better than being hot.

Original Mattress Factory. We had our first one for 10 years, just bought our second. Great quality, reasonable prices.

My mother-in-law made us sleep on her Sleep Number at our last visit. I hated it. Worst sleep I've ever had. Our mattress at home came from Costco and it's okay.

We got a Serta Tranquility - King from Macy's last year and we love it.

We applied for the Macy's CC and got $200 off of it. which made the price just under $1000.
If you can wait they run some good sales in the June and July.

As for the sleep number if you want to try one out, the Sheraton hotels have them.

*** one other thing. Our sales person told us if you apply for the Macy's CC don't use the card until after you get your first statement. You see for new acct you get 20% your first purchase however they do not bill you for the mattress until it is delivered. So if you use the card before the mattresses come you won't get the 20% off of them which is a high price purchase to loose a 20% discount on!

We have a King sleep number that we bought 10 years ago and love it. I like my side soft and my wife likes her firm. It's the best bed we've ever had.

Thank you for all of your input!

My dad had a Tempurpedic after my mom passed and when he passed my brother got it and put it in his guest room, so whenever we visit that's where we sleep. It's awful! It's hot and I feel like I'm "sinking" for lack of a better word. I know they make cooler ones now that aren't supposed to get as hot but I cannot get over the feeling that I'm drowning.

Yeah, we're planning on getting a new bed. I always wanted a sleigh bed so we got one when we went from the Full to the Queen. Now I've had it for 7 years and it is such a pain to tuck in the sheets and blankets. It is beautiful but I'm over it. We'll just get a basic frame/headboard.

Probably go mattress shopping over my Spring Break. Thanks again and keep the ideas coming!

:thumbsup2 We are loving our king size mattress and box spring from OMF.

We got the 2 sided pillow top, wonderful.

BUT (isn't there always a but???) if I had to do it over again I would do what I
originally wanted to do (but was talked out of it by a salesman).

King mattresses are HUGE. And very heavy. You need to rotate and flip regularly.

I wanted to get 2 twins with the little thingy that goes down the middle to make it seem like a king.
I was talked out of it. I really wish (every time we flip that huge flippin' thing!) we had bought what I thought we needed.

Never liked OMF after watching an news article about 10 -12 year ago about them paying people $5.00 for each mattresses they collected from curb lawns and bring them to the store. After which OMF stripped the covers off and sewed new covers on the frame. Selling a mattress with all sorts of crude in the insides like dried urine, dander, and whatever else.

I believe you, but I have never heard about this happening. Do you have anything to substantiate this info? I just did a quick google rumor search and couldn't find anything.

A friend told me the same thing about OMF a few years ago.
My parents have sleep number and say they wouldn't recommend it because it is like two twins and that aggravates them. They actually own 3 King mattresses. Their old one (foam you supposedly never needed to flip) is in a guest room at their home and they have another one (too firm for me) in their bedroom in the cabin on their farm.

My sister has a Simmons memory foam but I can't stand how you sink down.

Tempurpedic is supposed to have a cooling layer now.

Good luck. It's hard to find the right one.

We are looking also - queen however.

Thanks for the name specific suggestions! I did a search on here and a lot of people said they liked their memory foam, for example, but didn't give the name.

We want names people!!:rotfl:

We just got a new queen from QVC. It is. Sealy. It has like a 3 inch pillowtop. Their prices are great and include delivery & removal!

You need to rotate and flip regularly.

I recommend finding a mattress you don't have to flip (pillowtops).

Maybe you are still supposed to rotate them, but in 10 years of our Queen mattress, we never rotated ours.

We have a king size sleep number mattress and I hate it. I like a soft mattress and DH likes firm, and when we get out of bed in the AM in looks like there's a huge dent in my side of the bed (and I'm not a huge person). You can't sleep in the middle of the bed at all, so DH and I can't really cuddle very well. And my side has a leak, and when we tried to invoke the warranty they said it didn't. We've had it for 10 years and I've never been happy with it!

Before the Sleep Number we had a Latex (not memory foam) mattress and I LOVED it. But latex mattresses are expensive and we couldn't afford a king at the time. I wish we'd just saved up and bought one!

Pillow tops just on one side? In that case you are right, no need to flip.
Ours is a 2 sided pillow top and you are supposed to flip on a regular basis.
