Upgrading tix to AP for discount?

I have a room only ressie for next Jan. If an AP rate were to be released and I applied that to my reservation, do I have to have the AP in hand upon check-in or can I upgrade my existing park hopper ticket to an AP at check-in to become an AP holder and get the AP rate that was [hypothetically] applied to my reservation? Does this make sense? I just don't want to buy an AP on the "hopes" that a code will be released.

Thanks to anyone who understands what I'm asking, lol.

We did this in 2005, we bought the base tickets and when an AP discount came out for our time frame we were able to change our room only reservations with AAA discount to AP discount. Then we stoped at Downtown Disney and upgraded my ticket to an AP so we would have it for check in, and although they are supposed to confirm you actually have an AP at check-in they never asked to see mine. But, if you do get an AP discounted room I would definetly upgrade your ticket to an AP before you attempt to check-in just in case they do ask to see it.

Thanks for the reply :) So I can't upgrade a ticket at the check-in desk at the hotel?

No you can only upgrade at guest services at any of the 4 parks or at Downtown Disney there is also a guest services booth.

Hmm, okay thanks for that info. I may have to rethink things as we come from the west coast so our flight gets in late afternoon and the last thing I'll want to do is trudge somewhere to get my ticket upgraded. Although I will only be a monorail ride away from MK so maybe it will work.
Again, thanks for the help.

I was about to ask a similar question. Can someone tell me if I got this right ?

Should an AP discount come up for the resort we're booked in, I can call and apply that code to my ressie ? They won't ask for an AP number or anything like that ? Then when we check in, we will have to show our APs. Right?

(We're doing a split stay. First 3 days at POP on a MYW w/dining package; I've been thinking of upgrading our tickets to APs on our first day and now I'm checking to see if it's really worth it)

No you don't have to give an AP number when you book. We also went to DTD and bought our pass on arrival. The concierge desk is supposed to be able to do upgrades but on our last trip the guy at the desck didn't know how and we still had to go to a park to add days.
