Upgrading tickets and AP room discount?

So, I'm thinking about getting an AP again soon and I think it might be worth getting one for the room discount that's out there now. Can I buy a ten day ticket from somewhere like Undercover tourist and upgrade it to an Ap the same day I plan to check in with the AP discount or do I have to have the AP when I book the room or check in? I know I have done this before many years ago, but I forget if it still works the same way. Do you guys know? Do I have to use the ticket to enter the park, then upgrade, then check in? Thanks for your help! Not trying to get around any rules, but looking to maximize value within the rules

Travel agents can check for AP discounts, too. Ap room discounts can be pretty substantial!
