As StackySnacky said, when you take the ticket in, they will scan it letting you know before anything else is done what the value is. Then you have the option to use it as is, or apply that value to a like ticket, or better.
I am VERY aware how confusing this is, there are many rules etc. You just have to weigh whether the ticket is worth more to you now, than it would be to have it applied to something else. Rule of thumb... if it is over 1 year old and in the case between changing a PH to a MYW tickets, you are usually going to come out ahead with keeping it the way it is.
Sorry to have confused your wording. I guess I have always thought of rip to be the shortened version of ripoff...my mistake
You can talk to someone at Guest Relations and explain your situation, and it is possible that an exception could be made in this one instance, but it is totally at that castmembers discretion. Your best bet would be to have your child with you, that way there should be no question what you need to do. If they follow the letter of the law, and many do, you will probably be told what I have stated here, which is the policy given for unused child's tickets upgrades to adult.
When will you be going to WDW? I sincerely hopes this works out in your favor.
