Upgrading from PH to AP?

Are multi day base tickets purchased at a disney store still considered discounted and thus should be used for admission at least once prior to upgrade? Also, do I understand correctly that, whether you do the AP upgrade on day 1 or day 5, your AP effective date will be the first day the original 5 day base tx is used and not when the AP upgrade is done? Sorry for the highjack and thank you for any insight.

2. Yes. (That's what makes it an upgrade of an existing ticket.)
