Upgrading free tickets?

Hi all, I'm a first-timer to Universal Orlando and planning to go for 2-3 days with the family during the third week of December before the peak Christmas rush. I'll be using some free tickets (1 day, 2 park-to-park tickets) I got by redeeming my Regal Cinemas points. Can I upgrade these tickets when I arrive at the park to multi-day tickets or annual passes and just pay the difference? Does it matter that these are free tickets?

Also any thoughts on whether to get Express Pass during that time? Debating whether to spend a night at RPR.

We upgrade loyalty tickets all the time. As long as they don't say COMP on them, you should be able to upgrade and just pay the difference.
