I am thinking about upgrading my AAA membership so I can actually get my car towed to my own mechanic if need be. Does anyone have the upgraded membership? Do you think it is worth it?

We've always had the upgraded membership, and thought it was worth it. They once towed my car more than 60 miles!

YES, i've had it probably for about 15 years and when my car broke down about 10 years ago in Redding PA and i had to be towed home about 2 1/2 hours it was worth it!!!

Thanks, that's what I've been thinking.

We upgraded to premier last year since all our vehicles are 12+ years old. With it you get 200 mile tows.

We broke down 189 miles from our house this past fall and they towed us right to our nieghborhood mechanic.

Yes it is worth it!!!

We've always had the upgraded membership b/c the basic (three miles) wouldn't even tow my van home from the nearest main road - or to the nearest gas station from most main roads where I live. I may not need a 100 mile tow but 20-40 is fairly standard for my day to day distances when I leave the house. I guess it really depends on if you live in a city or in a rural area, plus how far you drive and where you'd want it towed to if you broke down. We always tow it home first for DH to see/fix.

A few weeks ago AAA was offering a free "plus" upgrade for the price of a basic if ordered online. You might try checking it online or even asking when you call if you decide to join. Worst case scenerio, they can only say no, right?:goodvibes

I am only upgrading to "plus" so that's 100 miles, but hopefully that will be enough.

I just called and got it done. It's about another $70 extra for the year.

I work for AAA and the premiere membership is available only in certain areas. It is good for one long tow of up to 200 miles instead of the usual 100 miles. Plus membership is worth the extra money.

I signed up for the Premiere last year. It's a little pricey, but the 200 mile towing might be worth it with kids away at college. We exceeded our 100 mile towing once on our van, but they gave us a discounted rate for the additional 70 something miles, so it wasn't too bad.

The Premiere also has a lockout service for your home, which might come in handy.

Pooh'smate --- is it true that AAA rates vary from state to state? I have one kid in college who they tell me can no longer be on our membership because she turned 24. She's trying to decide whether to stay a member where we live or switch to where she is in school.

Thanks.

Sheila

I have the Plus membership, and think that it is worth every single penny. With the Plus membership (they might call it something different in other states), they will tow you up to 100 miles. Last September, I had a problem with my alternator, and they towed me 95 miles, no problem!

My Mom just joined AAA after my dad passed away last summer so that she could get some peace of mind, and I encouraged her to get the Plus membership upgrade, but she wasn't eligible...you have to be a 'regular' member for a year before they will let you upgrade to the Plus, probably to prevent people from joining when they know they will need the service soon. But Mom has already decided that she will upgrade as soon as she is able.

I go back and forth with it, as it suits my needs...

If you're planning a big road trip, the AAA Plus definitely worth the extra $$ as you can have your car towed to the shop of your choice (within 100 miles). Regular membership only allows for a tow to the nearest garage.

Traveling abroad? Need a passport?? Passport pictures are free for AAA Plus members.

Just a couple of reasons why AAA Plus is worth the money...

Whaaat?? We just paid $8 each to have those photos taken....and we EACH had to provide our AAA plus card before paying for the service.:headache:

Yes and Yes! :thumbsup2

YES, we have the upgraded and I pay for all 5 of us drivers to have our own cards. DD (17) just got her license, so I need to get her a card ASAP. She will be driver #5.

It is also a safety issue to me with the teens/young adults. i remind them, remember YOU are covered, not your car, YOU. And that even if you are a passenger in a friends car that breaks down, call AAA for their car too. I remember breaking down at night in Jersey City, NJ and again in Newark NJ while a college student.... a little scary. I remind my kids, we had no cell phones back then, you had to walk and look for a working pay phone.

We have no new cars here, they vary from 240,000 miles to 60,000 miles.

Good when you rent, too. Once at the MGM-Studios parking lot, I was driving a rental car, and somehow locked the keys in the car, WITH THE CAR RUNNING! AAA was there in less than 10 minutes. Duh!

Have saved $$ using AAA for Amtrak and also Universal trips.....

We had the regular cheapest plan, when we needed to be towed more than the allotted 3 miles or whatever...they offered us the upgrade and we just paid the difference then.
