Upgrading a Pass... :(

Now I'm officially irritated with Disney.

I called to check on upgrading my Premium Pass to the Signature. At this point, it would add the PP+ benefit, which I want for my upcoming December trip. I don’t care about block outs at the end of year, I never go then, anyways.

So….I recently renewed my PAP at the beginning of August. It cost me $719.00, because I was given a $60 renewal discount…pretty standard. The normal price is $779.00.

So I’m thinking I should only have to pay the difference in the two passes’ price…$779 vs $849. $70.00.

NOPE! They tell me I have to pay the difference between $719 and $849…so, $130.00. WHAT??? Why offer people the incentive to renew via a discount if you’re just going to make them pay it later when/if they want to upgrade?

My understading has always been when upgrading you always have to pay the difference that you PAID . not the cost. Otherwise they would lose money.

I understand your point of view but the point of a renewal discount is just that - a renewal. An upgrade to a different tier is different. Just my opinion.

I feel like the renewal discount, beyond being an incentive, also breeds loyalty to some extent. I've been a PAP holder for several years and feel like Disney should just "Let it Go" on trying to get that $60 back. I don't agree that they're losing money...they already gave that $60 away when they offered the discount to begin with...if they were losing money, they would discontinue the renewal discounts altogether. And people like myself renewing year after year is due in part to the perks being an AP holder brings, including a renewal discount that I really don't want to have to essentially "give back" in order to upgrade...they're getting the upgrade fees and my continued spending in the parks, etc.

I see your point on upgrading to a different tier, and would agree when upgrading from regular park tix to an AP...or from SoCal Select to PAP...those are major upgrades with significant perks and discounts to the holder. But upgrading from a PAP to Signature gets me downloading pics privilege but with block out dates I never had before. Not a mind-shattering difference, really.

It has always been like that. If you renewed your PAP, then upgrade to a Premier, you lost the savings. Or if you renewed a deluxe, then upgraded to a Premium, you lost the discount. It is probably cheaper to get the PP+ package.

I agree that it's disappointing, but it's generally consistent with the fact that DLR doesn't (usually) bridge ticket prices either when you upgrade.

Yep, if you purchase the PP+ 14 days in advance it only costs $69.95, so it's about the same as you wanted to pay anyway.

It seems like standard policy that they only give you credit for the amount you paid when upgrading anything. I had to upgrade my son's 2 day PH ticket to a 3-day ticket. I bought his ticket before the price increases in Feb. However, when I upgraded I was only given credit for the amount I paid at the old pricing vs. what the same ticket now costs. I ended up not benefiting at all from buying his ticket early! Live and learn!

I've bought PP+ before, but I figured for the same price in upgrade, I could use it for the rest of the AP year, rather than paying $69.95 every trip :)

I know...still bummed. I feel like a renewal discount is a little different since it's supposed to incentivize you to continue being an AP holder...why offer it just to essentially take it back.

Oh well.

That would be nice to have it for the whole year at the same price!

I agree! Again, a "perk" of being a higher-level pass holder.
The benefit is a little different, though...no CD, or hard copy character meal photos. I believe the benefit on the pass is simply downloading / digital pictures.

Many people choose the download option over the CD anyway.
