Is it possible to get an upgrade if you already have a confirmed cabin assignment?

Yes, you can even get upgraded at the port.

Any category can get an upgrade. Obviously, the higher you are, the less chance of an upgrade. Most cruises sail fairly full. DCL offers discounts to FL residents, travel agents, military, etc. as the sailing time nears in order to fill the ship. Thus, upgrades do not happen on a regular basis.

Yes, you can be upgraded after you have an assignment, after you have documents, etc. You may find out about an upgrade (free) as late as when you check in at the port. You may (rarely) be able to purchase an upgrade at the port.

The bottom line is to book a cabin that you will be happy in. Then, if you get an upgrade, it is a bonus. Don't book low hoping for an upgrade. Odds are that it won't happen.

I would be curious as to ....

... who out there HAS received an upgrade (Free)? I got one last year - cat 9 to cat 6. I've sailed twice on DCL and this year will be #3.

Also - on Carnival I was upgraded from a window to their penthouse (largest cabin - of which they had about 10 or 12 on the ship). This seems in part because I had 4 in our party - and perhaps because they might have known this was my first ever REAL cruise (?) - and it was nice. And on RCCL I was upgraded on a Western Crib sailng from an inside to a window about 2 years ago.

Outside of these three occasions - I don't think we had any other free upgrades out of about 17 or 18 cruises. SO I figure our odds have been 1 in 6 across all cruise lines.

You can do a search on the boards. There have been so many threads about this over the years. The bottom line seems to be...there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to free upgrades. GTY status SEEMS to have better chance, but a statitician would tell you the percentage error between GTY status and an actual room number getting an upgrade is minimum. Everyone who has watched these boards over the years will tell you to get the cabin category you will be happy in and if you get an upgrade, well... enjoy it!

I'll send some pixie dust to all those who hope for an upgrade. But there are folks who have cruised more than 10 times on Disney and never got an upgrade.....so if that's any indication.... hey you might have better chance playing the lottery in hopes of taking the winning money and putting it down on an upgrade.

I think I need some from captaincrash!!! You seem to have the "upgrade touch"!!!

We've always requested the same cat. 11 room, 7127 because it is near aft deck 7 and we know for sure that it is quiet and so on. But I have also wondered if we could get an up grade unexpectedly.

So far, we haven't had this happen in 3 trips. Maybe the 4th will bring some luck!!!

In the end, I'm just thrilled to be going. It is a blast!!!!
