How many called asked for an upgrade prior to checking in vs. being surprised once you got there? I read someplace here on the threads that if you call in advance to arrival looking for upgrades and nothing is avail you won't get it. That it is better to ask upon arrival. We are going to pay the extra $ for a perferred room at CBR since I heard it could be a trek just to refill your mug...so not sure what kind of upgrades would even be an option there. I've never stayed on property.....but would loves great surprises!!
Asking for a complementary upgrade, whether in advance or at check-in, is a good way to ensure that you won't get one. We've had a number of current and former cast members post here that they would never give an upgrade to a customer who asked for a free one.
Asking how much it would cost to upgrade your room at check-in, though, is fine. I think that may be what you've been reading about.
Disney does complementary upgrades for their own operational and business reasons. To the guest, it looks like 'pixie dust', but the upgrades are generally assigned before you even arrived at the resort, because they need to free up the room you would have gotten for some reason.
