Upgrades/Pixie Dust

How many called asked for an upgrade prior to checking in vs. being surprised once you got there? I read someplace here on the threads that if you call in advance to arrival looking for upgrades and nothing is avail you won't get it. That it is better to ask upon arrival. We are going to pay the extra $ for a perferred room at CBR since I heard it could be a trek just to refill your mug...so not sure what kind of upgrades would even be an option there. I've never stayed on property.....but would loves great surprises!!

Asking for a complementary upgrade, whether in advance or at check-in, is a good way to ensure that you won't get one. We've had a number of current and former cast members post here that they would never give an upgrade to a customer who asked for a free one.

Asking how much it would cost to upgrade your room at check-in, though, is fine. I think that may be what you've been reading about.

Disney does complementary upgrades for their own operational and business reasons. To the guest, it looks like 'pixie dust', but the upgrades are generally assigned before you even arrived at the resort, because they need to free up the room you would have gotten for some reason.

Cool! What a nice treat! Did you do online check in?

No, we didn't do online check in. And they had definitely upgraded us before we got there because the guy met us at the door and took us to the 12th floor, before we'd really said anything to anyone (except my mom had asked about the bathroom, lol, we'd had a long drive).

We were upgraded for our recent stay at WL from standard to inner courtyard view. :goodvibes
Last Aug at POR, garden view to pool view, Jan 2011 POR standard to river view.

We were upgraded from a preferred room to a family suite at ASMu in Jan. We were only there for one night but it was nice.

In 2010, we had booked a deluxe room at the BW. We had been at Epcot most of the day when we arrived and all of us were very tired. We were quickly escorted to the CL check in. The very nice gentleman checking us in kept saying that we were really going to like this room. This was our first time staying there so not sure what he meant. We were shocked when we were given a beautiful 2 bedroom suite. (Not sure if it had another name). It was amazing and obviously nothing we would be able to afford. Loved our stay at the BW and can't wait to get back.

We're staying at Polynesian in a GV room and while I know I'll love that, there's a part of me that's trying to justify a CL room. I do NOT expect it, but I know I'd love pixie dust. Well.. who wouldn't, right?

I love hearing these stories! What fun. I know I'll love whatever I get, including the very same room category for which I paid. It's Disney, after all, and I'll love it no matter what. But ohh... to dream.

(ASMo/Values) In December we were pleasantly surprised to find our connecting room request had been met (only 2nd time ever) and DH/My room had a wonderful King size bed:thumbsup2 The new room remodels are very lovely and we still comment how it felt like a new resort!

On our most recent trip this past Thanksgiving week we received an upgrade from a GW GV room to the Tower BLV

It was so magical when the CM checking us in said oh you have been upgraded to the Tower. It makes it that much more magical when you are not expecting it :goodvibes
