We are not locals but visit Universal each summer. We bought our power passes in August 2005. Our plan was to use them again in 2006 right after the blackout is lifted and before they expire.
Well my work schedule messed things up and we had to go in July. We had power passes that were only good weekends in July (we were staying a week). Lots of other ticket choices but when asked about upgrading the power passes (they expire in three weeks), guest services said for $130 plus tax they would upgrade them to Preferred Passes that would not expire until November 2007 (15 months). Since its $99 to renew a power pass anyway it seemed like a decent offer.
