Major congrats this kind of thing is something Disney still excels at. Never had that kind of upgrade but I always book standard view rooms ( it is just a room) and in 3 of the 4 trips Riverside and FQ have upgraded us to river view or garden view. Makes any trip just a little more magical.

Good for you! I'm glad they didn't do to you what happened to us in March. I had two rooms (3 of us total, me and my kids) booked at All Star Sports, and they "upgraded" us to ONE studio at BWV. That was no upgrade!

Good news and bad news. It will be very hard to return to the Pop Century after a taste of the AKL. Kind of like sampling steak then having them take it away. Enjoy the time there. Many years ago we tried the Grand Floridian because the Dixie landings was booked solid. Welll you know the rest, somehow we find the dough to stay at the GF now (still painful) and never returnd to DL(Now POR)

It's usually a way to "walk" a guest because they do not have enough rooms at the resort they booked. I have been walked ... I mean upgraded ... 3 times. The first two were in the couple years after 9/11 when Disney closed resorts because of low occupancy. I was upgraded to the Polynesian from CBR because they closed it in 2002. The second was a couple years later when they closed FOFQ and they upgraded us to AKL Standard View. They upgraded us to a Savannah View once we got there. That one cost us thousands and thousands of dollars since we bought into AKV DVC because of that stay . The last one was when we arrived at POR on the first day of "free dining" in August 2008 and we were upgraded to a 1BR at SSR.

I'm the opposite. I find now that deluxe resorts overpriced, and prefer Pop now! I wish I had discovered Pop a long time ago. I can't justify deluxe, and find the service lacking compared to comparably priced resorts elsewhere. Pop is fun, laid back, has great food options, and better bus service IMHO than many deluxe.

In this case, as in 99.9% of all free upgrades, the resort overbooked. There is a room refurbishment happening at All Star Movies where the OP was originally booked. This caused the resort to be overbooked on a couple days so they moved some guests to another resort.

Problem is that the Pop is just too far away especially at the end of the day. Do agree that the premium places are way over priced but then again, the occupancy rates seem to prove us wrong.

Too far away? AKL is too far for me any more. Pop is so close to Epcot.

I do like Epcot resorts, so from now on, I'll do the Swan or Dolphin anyway. Not doing Disney again.

AKL is amazing! You walk into that lobby and just WOW! Try to enjoy the resort as much as you can in one day- so much to see there!

Just got a call from Disney about my two rooms at All Star Movies for my one night Pre-Disney Dream cruise tomorrow..They moved both my rooms(no extra charge) to Animal Kingdom lodge!!..I know its only one night but I've never been there and I'm happy dancing!!

Because where OP was originally staying, All Star Movies, has 1 building closed due to a room refurbishment happening. If they don't have enough rooms left for guests already booked they will move them.

I wish they could upgrade us from the values to Polynesian some trip...
I know it's almost impossible but it was always my dream to stay at Poly, but it's soooooo expensive, and US dollar been 3.7x our money here in Brazil... it's like 100% impossible lol

So exciting! We've been so many times and have never had an upgrade. Fingers crossed for pixie dust. I love AKL, and am sure you will too. It's my dream to stay at the Poly one trip. It's just not ever going to be in the budget, especially now with my mom in a nursing facility. We're just happy to be able to go at this point. Enjoy your upgrade!

AKL was awesome!..both rooms were Kudu Trail view rooms! loved it!!..And at Magic Kingdom twice when I went to buy drinks and snacks they said "It's on Mickey today"!!...The Pixie dust was working on this trip!
