Outside of Vegas free upgrades are a little harder to get. ( I guess $20 isn't free but when it puts you in a suite it's free to me) People do get them but you can often get an upgrade at a less expensive rate than if you would have paid ahead of time. You just have to ask nicely and have good timing. If the boss is around don't ask. Be patient. I always ask wherever I am going. In vegas it has never failed. On our trip to Orlando, I couldn't get a concierge upgradeat AKL, which is what I was hoping for. Our 1st night offsite before AKL we got a 2 bedroom suite when all we paid for was a regular room. It was nice to have that much space. I just asked. At the PBH after check in I asked about upgrading to club level and we did for $60 a night which was about $40 a night less than when we booked the rooms. So it was a good deal for us. I enjoyed it so much I'm paying ahead this time at RPR to make sure we get it. Our last night off we also got a suite when we only paid for a regular room at no extra cost, just for asking. It really is all about timing. In vegas I have upgraded in every hotel I have ever stayed, Ceasars 2x's, Topicana (suite at front of building) , Aladdin, MGM, Paris ( 2 Cali suites!!! for us and the other couple with us), Luxor and Stardust. I never hurts to ask and all they will do is say we don't have anything or they will quote you a price to upgrade, if you don't like the price say thanks, but no thanks. Good luck, it's part of the adventure to try when you travel!!!
