Upgrade to annual pass

We have 7 day tickets that we got through our Airmiles. We want to upgrade them to annual passes. Do we have to use the tickets first to lock in current gate prices or can we just go ahead and upgrade them at guest services? Can we do this at Disney Springs or is it best to go to one of the parks?

There is no (longer) a requirement to use them 1st.

If you upgrade before use, the day you upgrade will be the 1st day of your 366 day AP year.

Otherwise your AP year begins when you use first the MYW tickets.

The tickets can be upgraded at DS or a water park. I've typically upgraded in a park, when leaving for an afternoon break because that's most convenient to me (not wasting precious AM time, not making a special trip to DS...) of course it depends on any AP discount(s) you may want, too.
