Upgrade Request (the kind you PAY for)

We have a standard room at POR booked for free dining. There were no preferred rooms available at the time for the free dining.

I know they won't let me call to upgrade to preferred room and keep the free dining, as there are only a certain number of rooms available at each category.

But, does this apply if I ask for a preferred room at check in? Can I ask for an upgrade (to pay for) to preferred and keep free dining at this point?
 
You can ask when you check into the resort. You will not lose yOur free dining if they have a room available for you to pay to upgrade.
 
I agree- it doesn't hurt to see what is available when you check in. Do not do the on-line checkin. That is designed for just picking up your keys (which will already be printed) and go. Just go to the regular check-in desk.
 
No you wouldnt lose your free dining if they have a room available for you to upgrade. If not, you could perhaps request a non-preferred room that is still relatively close to the main building, there are likely some rooms that are non-preferred that are still relatively close.

If I check availability online right before I leave, would that be a reliable way for me to know if there are preferred rooms available? It would stink if I waited in the regular check in line instead of online check in, and then there was nothing available.

You can check, but there is no guarantee if that one room is available and maybe somebody decided to stay an extra day.

If you are going to wait until check-in to request, then I would do the regular check-in. Really, I checked in the Saturday after Thanksgiving and the line was out to the door; but once they divided up the lines, it went really quickly.
 
You can also keep checking to see if a preferred room becomes available before your arrival. Once the promotion is over (as is the case with free dining), if you have booked a room on the promotion and want to make a change, but keep the promotion, you have to speak with Guest Services. Central Reservations cannot make the change.

There are often cancellations around the 45-day mark when people have to pay in full or cancel for a refund.

Keep checking with CRO and you may well land that preferred room with free dining.
