It looks as if my flight going into Orlando will have lots of first-class seats free. I'm assuming when I get to the gate I could just ask them if it's possible to get upgraded - yes? Has this worked for anyone?

My next question is a bit strange...I am not a great flier as I hate the take-off and turbulence. With that being said do you feel that sort of thing feels worse in first-class or since you are in first-class who would give a hoot?

I would upgrade to first class. Do you have a long flight. First class offers wider and more comfortable seats on most airlines. It is well worth it to upgrade and especially since you don't like to fly or haven't flown much. Those econ. seats will get to you fast is you coming from overseas.

The chances of getting a free upgrade unless you are a frequent flier are almost non-existant.

Generally speaking, free upgrades are first given to those with elite status, or in some cases in exchange for accepting a voluntary bump. On some carriers paying for an upgrade is allowed--that can range from $100 or so to $1000's, depending on how far you are traveling and your carriers policies.

IMHO turbulence is turbulence, regardless of where you are seated on the plane.

ETA--just because there are lots of FC seats free now, don't expect that to be the situation the day of your flight. The elite FF's get their automatic upgrades between 24 and 72 hours before the flight time, and will generally fill first class.

Definitely not expecting a free upgrade but it can't hurt to ask. No matter how much I fly (at least once a year) I am just never very good. You would think I'd be ok with stress since I have to navigate NY/NJ traffic LOL.

Ditto what Ducklite says. DH is an elite member with Continental and he usually gets his upgrade about 24 hours in advance of the flight. Chances are, the airline will fill those seats before you get to the airport.

Which airline? USAirways usually charges $100 for PIT/MCO upgrades for non-elites.
