I understand everyone's concerns. However, I really think we need to keep things as simple as possible. It is meant as a friendly competition and as a way to keep us motivated and moving during what is an "off season" for some of us. I think the less complicated we make things the more people will stay involved. I know I'm not going to get as many miles in as many of you because I am a walker -- and a slow one at that, but hopefully, my time will help keep my team in the thick of things.

Hope this makes sense. However, I really am a go-with-the-flow kind of girl, so I'll be fine with anything. I'm just concerned that the more rules we have the less fun we'll have.

I agree with Sandy! Well, said, Girlfriend!

The Game isn't for an Olympic Medal, Wheaties Endorsement or even a Super Bowl ring, it's just for fun and keeps us going and going and going and going and going and going....... Although....at the end of the game, when someone asks whatcha gonna do now? We can say, "We're all going to Disney World!!!"

If we overcomplicate it, the fun will dry up! The game will become too complicated and cumbersome and ....well you get the idea. And don't forget, you can't really quantify the good you do for yourself or the support we give to each other.

We all support what Panda Dave is doing to run this competition! Thank you for taking on this monumental task!!!

I think what Ironz and Scojo15 were saying (sorry to speak for you guys) is that for those of us who log a lot of bike miles, in some cases 50+ miles per week, the mileage will add up really quickly. It was just a fairness issue...because those two guys...and a few others like myself training for triathlons....will be biking a bunch :).

And yes...it's all friendly competition :). We just wanted to make sure that things were as fair as possible. But I understand wanting to keep it simple. :goodvibes And Dave's really taken the time to put together a very cool game.

Good luck to all the teams. Should be a fun way to stay on track! :thumbsup2

The hours will offset the miles! And the miles will offset the hours. So, it's all good. :cool1:

I think I just decided to take up biking. NOT that I could get 20 miles in an hour mind you, but I am pretty sure I could double my run miles. sigh, I broke my tailbone in childbirth and sitting on a bike is torture.

How about run and walk mileage and just the time for everything else?

Yes you would count 20 miles and you would log one hour. If it was an aerobics class where you couldn't measure miles you would just log the hour. This is an incentive for people to NOT neglect the cross training because it doesn't have miles.

War Panda:hippie:

AHHH! I knew I shouldn't have skimmed all the responses before responding. Although DH (the triathlete and bike nut) is chiming in that a biker is not about to skip a ride just cause the miles don't count.

My two cents - given the major difference in how the miles on a bike can add up versus miles of walking or running...

I think the miles tally should be just for walking or running.
The time tally would be for all cross training activities.

I was trying to point out that they won't offset....If a walker goes out for an hour, they'll probably log around 4 miles...a cyclist for an hour would log around 20 miles. Not that one person is better than another...it's all good with each of us getting out there and exercising, but it is kind of unfair for the walker to then be so far behind the cyclist. :goodvibes:

I think this is the best way to handle it...and housecleaning, yardwork, park hopping, etc should not be counted or things could get way out of hand....or maybe I'm just missing the point :confused3 :rotfl:

Anyway...it'll be fun to see all of us out there and how many miles and hours gets racked up...I bet the numbers will be staggering! :cheer2:

Okay, then let's just call it luck of the draw! You can't make it all the same. And who knows, maybe this will encourage others (like me) to get my bike out a couple of times a week!

Hello everyone. I will certainly let the team captains vote on the bike miles but hear me out first.

Everyone on the WISH site is a smart, dynamic, make it happen kind of person. Heck just look at the kind of jobs that are represented here. You guys are used to "FINDING A WAY TO BEAT THE ODDS", it's what you do.

I tried to put a mix of everything on the teams, but if you are worried about a person on another team putting a lot of miles on the bike, well I would think it would be good incentive to get yourself a bike. Or at least use your negotiating skills to talk a few people on your team to get one. You can always get a stationary bike with a odometer on it, park it infront of the TV and get some miles in that way.

The whole idea of the competition is to get people out of their comfort zone and get them to a new level. That won't happen if we have everyone doing about the same thing. Let's mix it up, and see what happens.

If most of us end up better, lighter and stronger athletes haven't we won reguardless of which team had the most miles and or hours.

In addition I wanted to make the game user friendly for when life gets in the way. If a team member lives in the far north and can't get out in the snow they can still do exercise tapes, and do fitness classes. Or use treadmills and other such machines.

Each person has to find a way to get it done. There are no restrictions on the type of physical exercise, so get off the couch and get yourself in motion.

To a person who is already doing a regular routine this might sound to lienent but to someone who is having to find the motivation go do something, anything, getting out and and push mowing the yard or playing tag with the kids, beats the heck out of making a snack and sitting back down. Anything strenous works for me, of course light housework like dusting, laundry and vacuuming is not loggable. Strenous is the key word. Remember we have people of all levels of fitness on these teams, but hopefully by the marathon next year we will all have increased our fitness level.

Some of those people who are not doing a lot right now just might surprise everyone by years end.

Besides team Hakuna Matata is gonna kick y'all's buttocks anyway so just relax and take your whipping.

Excellent post windwalker/panda!!

Ya know...I workout 5 or 6 times a week, so that is nothing new to me...but this challenge has me excited! I like the team aspect, too!

and I can go either way with the bike miles...will just report to my captain what all I do each week. Y'all just don't kill me when I hit 100 mile weeks, though. :flower3:

Dave: The bike miles brings up a valid point. Mind you this is, again, only my opinion. If there are enough triathletes signed up, is it possible to rearrange the teams (stop crying) so that there is 1 triathlete on each one or 1 high mile biker I guess. I noticed that the triathletes are mostly on 1 team and I think this is where the concern is for everyone else. I personally, do not care. I feel that it is what it is and we do what we do. This is not about winning, it is about being better and more accountable for what we do and, hopefully, setting in motion a lifestyle that just absorbs our exercise instead of having to MAKE time for it.

This is just an opinion, I now return you to your regularly scheduled Presidential debate...oh sorry, wrong station.

Great post oh War Panda. I agree on almost all accounts. Your only point in error is that it is Buzz's Brigade that will be handing out the whippings -- not Hakuna Matata. After all infinity and beyond is a whole lotta miles.

I just happen to have a custom made "Giant" Tri bike in my garage that has been a place for dust the last 15 years since I did my last Tri. I just might have to get the tires aired up and squirt some oil on it. I have a feeling that there are some others on this competition that will be doing the same.

I don't think people like Space Ranger, Red Dragon and PrincessRunner are gonna go down easy whether they have a triathlete on the team or not.

Heck by the time this is over we may have a few more Triathletes on the WISH team.

Okay, I have tried to keep quiet but I have to say my peace now. I think people have lost sight of what the real "prize" is here. It is about our health and the motivation through this game to get there. That is how we win. It is to move us toward exercise being part of our world not a forced piece in our day. It is about getting to where we want to be, no matter what our ultimate goal is. For some of us, it is a 5K, for some of us it is Goofy, and for some of us it is just to get out and get moving. It is not about winning the lottery, it is about winning your life and your health.

I think we need to let go of the fact that there is a prize and just do what we do best, move our bodies, no matter how that is and let the chips fall where they may.

And you are right Dave, I ain't going down without a good wrassle!!

You're right. I am more interested in seeing my own progress throughout the year. The team "competition" gives us and element of fun and a bit of accountability to our fellow WISHers. Ultimately, it's all about getting out there and getting moving in one way or another.

I kind of forgot there was a prize aspect - I think the idea of a good, healthy competition is the most important thing!

Hi Everyone,

If it's not too late, I would love to join a team - or be a sub - or whatever I can do. :goodvibes

My running buddy blew out her knee skiing last week and I am afraid that I may not stay motivated to work out. I always seem to need a goal to shoot for.

I have signed up for Goofy 09 but need to get things going and sign up for a couple of races between now and then.

Anywho... please let me know if I can join and in what capacity.

Good luck to everyone!

I agree with the (place adjective here) Panda. This is a motivational tool (In my case, a much needed motivational tool). So if the current format motivates you to look into biking a couple days a week, its working. I know that in Toledo, biking on my trainer is the easiest way to get cardio in when the snow is falling.

Anyway, thanks for organizing this Dave. Although in 11 months I'll be blaming you for my DISboard addiction.
