American Express Shutdowns Occurring
There are multiple datapoints coming out of American Express shutting down credit card accounts, it seems those affected are having all of their cards closed (sources: /r/churning, reader e-mails, @milesperday and MtM). Those with accounts shut down report receiving an automated e-mail message informing them of the shut down. The common thread seems to be cardholders that have used their cards to make a large volume of payments using PayPal Key, the shut down risk might also have been increased if this was paired with the 3x referral bonus.

In the past American Express has shut down accounts for ‘abusing’ no lifetime language links and other reasons.

so with retail me not, can you earn cash back from say shopdisney, when purchasing gift cards ? Today shows %10 cash back. Would it help if I purchased something else with the gift cards? Of course trying to find the best cash back/discount on GC for disney. A few yrs ago I was using in store cash back and buying GC from home depot and walgreens, but unsure how the rules have changed

RMN states "Purchases of gift cards are excluded."



Though it works for some but not others and is considered YMMV. I would not play Russian roulette with large sums, test it out with a low amount.

I'll also add, this is where you do NOT want to put in a claim; it can flag your account and/or the merchant preventing others from receiving CB. Yes, it seems unfair but that's how it's been for a long time. Good luck!

Without causing confusion, I also wanted to add a few more details:
Many have purchased physical and/or eGift cards, with and without merchandise as well as tried various cc's, even redemption points. There is no common thread to pin point why it works or doesn't.

Currently on Post #6: Cashback (CB) Portals Discounted Gift Card Websites & Apps , I'm tracking two DISer's who used RMN to buy DGC at other stores. I'll update when I learn more.

Just an update - I went in and filed a query for my Missing Shopping trips with Rakuten yesterday AM. All I had to do was copy and paste the email confirmation of the order from Sam's and they credited my cash back to my account that evening.

Has anyone ever had an issue with Disney gift cards ordered from BJ's? I've ordered a bunch this year and I've been combining them to use to pay my DVC dues. I just received a batch that appears to not be activated.

I’m still waiting for the ones I ordered with the Black Friday deal. I’ve called twice, I have the tracking number just waiting for USPS to deliver them.

Did you get activation slips with them?

I saw the post regarding Happy Cards turning into Happy Swap cards. I think I may still have an original Happy card or two that I didn't get to swap out at BBB or HD before the shut down last spring. If I can dig them up, does anyone know if they still work for gift cards?

There were activation slips but the don't appear to be correct. I ordered on multiple days and this was the first time I had a problem. I ordered in $25 increments. They were batched in 10 each and one batch of 10 isn't activated. I ordered 25 and the activation for the multiples says qty 40. I think they sent the wrong paperwork and maybe sent me a batch that wasn't activated. I will have to call them in the morning and hope they fix it. Part of the shipment was activated.

I haven't had too much trouble with shipping. I'm only waiting for 1 more order.

Good luck, I hope you get it all worked out. The tracking shows my cards arrived at the Buffalo USPS facility 3 days ago. I live about 20 minutes from there. And 3 days later... I have no idea when I’ll get them.

Yep and it was a nightmare to get the one they didn't activate activated but they did finally do it. Took a ton of calls and every person told me something different. I hope they get it fixed for you right away.

I had an old Happy Guy card that I used at HD this week to buy a GC. I was prepared for it not to work, but it did. I went to self-checkout, though I don't know if that mattered. This was the last Happy card that I had and I'm happy to be rid of it.

Glad yours worked! I bought a couple Happy Cards with the Amex promotion and noticed that some are ones that are only e-cards and swapped for store gift cards. Others are physical cards - I got the ones that can be used in Lowe’s and was able to get another gift card with it too.

Check your emails for Best Buy Mystery Certificate up to $5,000! I got $5 good until 12/14/2020. I know it’s not much but yours could be more. I bought a pair of earbuds on sale for $7.50 so they only cost me $2.69 with tax and using the reward.

We never get these mystery coupons from Best Buy and we shop there - a lot. I still have a stack of free/discounted gc via SB from the good ol' days.

I remember reading your posts when you had trouble with them. I had bought a bunch from BJs too and luckily didn’t have any trouble. But I didn’t renew my online membership and still have DGC left that I haven’t used since we have canceled 2 trips. So I decided not to buy Any this year from them.
