UPDATED..did math wrong..WAGES for Carnival room stewards and bar waiters!!!

My original numbers are after the revised ones I calculated...I got a little carried away...

I'm watching a documentrary on Carnavial cruise lines...

Deck bar waiters make $1.50 per day plus tips
Room stewards make $1.50 per day for 2 6hr shifts...plus tips

she had 19 rooms, it was a 7 day cruise so at 3 person average per cabin $73.50 (not$24.50) per cabin she should have made about OOPS $1396.50 (not$465.50) for the week but she stated that some people didn't tip her at all....

So for the month she should make about $5586 (not $1862) but she pays her helper $800 per month no matter what she makes. This person is employed in a different area of the ship and in their off time they help her tidy the rooms that she cleans (wipes sinks, fold the ends of TP and kleenex, etc.) So, $45 in payroll plus the $4831 (not$1062) left over from tips leaves the person making $4831 (not$1107) for the month 336 hrs. of work. $4831 divided by 336 is $14.38 per hour.... But if someone didin't pay a helper which she stated was the norm...they would make a whopping $16.76 per hour (not5.67 per hour)...

She also must skip lunch because she didn't have time to clean her morning rooms and make it to the mess before the mess closes

So if you have ever thought about not tipping the minimum please think again...and if your steward is doing an excellant job remember these numbers and tip more.....

OK so if everyone tips and they don't they should make a pretty good wage....

Wow....$14.38 per hour.... .in some countries that may be a lot but here no way could you support a family on that kind of money!! Plus all the hours they have to work to earn it....Glad I overtipped!!!!

Hello! That's about how much I make an hour! But of course, I work hard and save hard to have my enjoyment. And I live in America and pay taxes out of that.

I believe that these people work hard and deserve the tips suggested by Disney and probably more. I tip more for good joyful service, but what exactly is the point that you are trying to make here?

You don't have to convince me!
I know how hard the crew members in service positions work, as well as the length of time (and with no overtime pay!). We always tip at least the minimum...it would take a really bad experience to make me tip less than that. And we usually end up tipping more because we have been fortunate to get exceptional service most of the time.
When we were on Voyager of the Seas, we walked out into the hall and heard the people from the rooms on either side of ours talking (they were out there already). One guy said he was going to not tip the stateroom hostess at all, and the other said he was going to leave her a dollar and a nasty letter. I never figured out what their problem was, as we had the same hostess and the service was fine. If they had a problem, I think they should have mentioned something at the beginning of the week instead of waiting until the end and stiffing her. We made sure to tip her extra. I can't imagine what they thought was wrong, as her service was fine for us.

Does anyone know what they make on DCL? we just returned--will be in cruise withdrawal forever---but they all work so hard. Our stateroom host was Fermin--did an excellent job and gave him extra. Our dining room head server was Zouhaier from France and he was fantastic. We had Glenn and Navneet for our table and they were good--Navneet was wonderful with the kids and we were happy to tip extra, but they said they often get less than the suggested tip. Beth

I had been told one my servers, that since many of the servers and room stewards are foreign they do not have to pay taxes on the tips and wages. Also, many of them are supporting families back in their home countries and most of the money they make goes back to them. On our recent cruise our one server was from on of the Russian countries and he is sending one of his son's through Stanford University and then the rest of the money goes back to his wife and other son in Russia. They work long hours and I do overtip for good service. I would not even think to not tip at all, even if the service was marginal.

what exactly is the point that you are trying to make here?

Well when I saw the show I did the numbers and I couldn't believe how little they made...I made my post then realized that I did the numbers wrong...So my original point was that they didn't make much for all the work they did... well when I redid the numbers they made a ok amount...so my original point didn't mean as much but I had already posted so I just edited it..

I can't remember which cruise I was one, but I had heard the waiter say that most of the time at least one third of the folks that are one a cruise do not tip at all. That is terrible! I believe that many of the cruise lines now add the tip on to your room charges, and I am all for that. Of course, you can adjust them at your discretion, but I think this might put a stop to some folks who wouldn't otherwise tip.

We sat with folks on one cruise who ate in the dining room for every meal except for the last night and breakfast the following morning. I suppose this was to avoid paying tips. I felt really awful for our servers.
