Updated Canada/US Border Rules Announced 19 July 2021

So for the return test before flying home to Canada, what if one of us tests positive? We will all be fully vaccinated but I’ve heard there’s some still contracting the virus that are vaccinated. Will we be denied boarding the flight coming home? I can’t imagine being stuck and not able to come home… 😕

thai ai my concern and then if we isolate in FLi would assume vaxxed or not one of us after another would test positive and it could end up being longer than 10 days..

That is the big thing to take into consideration when traveling anywhere right now. You cannot board a flight home without a negative test. We plan on traveling to Florida and driving home with a rental should we have a positive test. You can enter by land.

Between vaccines, extra precautions and incubation period, we feel it is very unlikely to test positive on Day 4 of our trip (72 h before departure). That said, it is a possibility and we are ready should it occur.
I will be calling insurance companies in the next few days to see about coverage. I'll post what I find!

Yes, you’ll be denied. That’s the reason we are not travelling outside of the country right now.

Would you want someone who knows they’re positive boarding a plane with you? Everyone boarding a flight must present a negative test.

You need to have alternate plans as mentioned above should this happen because it’s a possibility with travel right now, especially as cases in the US are growing exponentially daily. A vaccine does not prevent a person from contracting Covid, it decreases the severity.

Actually that isn't true. It does both. It just isn't 100% effective in keeping you from contracting Covid.

Just a quick clarification. The Vaccine significantly decreases your likelihood of contracting the virus to begin with, and of course reduces the severity.

I know this was probably implied, but I wanted to make sure it was implicit. :)

Thank you. This is what I was trying to say. Even a fully vaccinated person can contract the virus, it should reduce the severity. Thanks for helping explain what I didn't say clearly. Some people feel they cannot contract the virus if they are fully vaccinated, which is untrue.

Yes, with a positive you would be denied boarding the flight. You would need to check with your airline for its rules re: how long you have to wait from a positive test before they will grant clearance to fly even with a subsequent negative test.

These is the Government of Canada guidance for Canadian airlines: https://tc.canada.ca/en/initiatives...travellers-flights-departing-aerodrome-canada

We are currently in a level 3 travel advisory (reconsider travel), here in Canada, and I was wondering what type of travel insurance have people traveling into the US, Mexico, etc have been able to get or have you just been getting medical or were you able to get cancel for any reason?

I booked thru Westjet, so it includes the complimentary Covid insurance. Worst case, I’d be stuck in a hotel for an extra couple weeks. I’m vaccinated- so lowers my chances of getting it/or having a severe case.

The included Westjet insurance is pretty good. Medical plus $300 a day for hotel if you have to quarantine. Considering it’s free, it’s all DH and I need since we are also fully vaccinated.

We’d have to move off-site, though…can’t get a Disney hotel for $300 that I’d be willing to spend two weeks quarantined in…

OK, for those of you saying you'd rent a car if you test positive to drive back to Canada, how does this work? Don't you have to self isolate? Does the USA not have any rules around that? Will a car rental place rent a car to you if you've got covid? I'm sure you have to disclose it.

I don't get it. I thought the point if you've got covid is to stay in one spot, not travel across a country. Will you not stop to eat, or use a bathroom, sleep? I'm sorry I just can't wrap my brain around why people think it would be ok to do this unless it's allowed in the USA but I don't think it is.

Honestly for us it is about having options and flexibility. Isolation is 10 days in the US, boarding a flight to Canada cannot be done before Day 14. We've done the long drive a few times and like to have an option in case flights are not available or have gone up drastically after isolating.

When traveling these days it is crucial to be aware of policies regarding quarantining and isolating.

Thanks for clarifying. When people say renting a car and driving because they can't get on a plane, makes it sound like they're not planning the isolation part.

I don't plan on testing until I land in Buffalo. I'll rent a car at the airport and a hotel and then test and once I get the test results drive the hour home. There is no requirement to test before flying between 2 points within the US.

My sister’s school admin. sent a notice out to staff last week, “reminding” everyone of the guidelines. It’s possible they were basing it on outdated information, but she wasn’t willing to take the chance.
Ignore your admin...I will if they try to pull that. The provincial guidelines state you can say you were not out of Canada for the past 14 days if fully vaccinated. Period.

I didn’t think you could drive across yet? Or is that just for going into US now?
