UPDATED AUGUST 18! :-) "GIRLS ONLY" question

I've never had the detector 'go off' from my underwire, but if you get pulled aside for one the wand checks, it will beep from that. Even the hooks on the back of my bra made the handwand go off; more than a little embarrassing as you're standing spread eagle while they move the wand over your body; then pat you down at every point it goes off.

I think it happened to me, twice, at a NY airport. The metal detector went off, but the ONLY other metal on me was my "normal" blue jeans. They "wanded" me, but nothing made it beep and they let me go. I went into an immediate panic when the metal detector went off - I KNEW there wasn't anything else that was setting it off.

It has never happened to me at any other airport (including MCO).

Oh, I'm a "B".

don't worry about it too much. If you're setting it off, MANY other women are, too.

Years ago, underwire bras were really WIRE---and yes, I know that some still are. However, several manufacturers have moved to a plastic "wire" instead.

I used to set off the alarms ALL the time (I quickly learned to alert the screener to the source) I can't remember the last time my bra set off the alarm (belt buckle, yes <g>--bra, no)

Good Luck...I think it's a bit unnerving to go thru the screening procuss at the airport. Unfortunately, a sign of our times.

I have set off the detectors a couple of times. Do not know what set them off in the first place. The security people were very nice and are used to wanding in as professional manner as possible. I do find it amussing that they always ask if they may check my ankles (I'm sure that they are instructed to ask). What am I going to say, "No"? I'm sure that would be a quick way to really be looked at. I always thank them for asking because I am very tickelish and would not want to be jumping around. That would be a pretty sight.

I was scared to death of this happening to me and thought about going out and buying a bra w/o underwire but the more I thought about it I just decided to chance it b/c w/o underwire I'm going to be all over the place and the "puppies" are just not going to be where they should :earseek:

Lucky for me and everyone else I did not set off the detectors.... (36 DD). :cool1:

This had never even crossed my mind! I haven't flown in years, now I have THIS to worry about, too? :rotfl: :rotfl:

I had this happen, but it was the clasps not the underwire, my SO just walked away from me and sat down like he was not with me :rotfl2: I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.

YES IT DOES!!!!! I'm not large, between 34C and 36B... and it did set off the detectors! they made me go through a couple of times, remove your shoes, your watch, your earings, gold chain, rings etc.... only underware, jeans and shirt.... I was totally oblivious to the fact that my bra was underwired... it never crossed my mind and I was thinking "what could possibly be setting off the detectors" then they wanded me and sure? IT WAS THE UNDERWIRE.... the lady actually kind of "touch" it... it was all very professional but very uncomfortable too... I just couldn't beleive they would check THAT!!!!! granted, it has been the only time that has happened and I think those detectors have some kind of calibration so most of the time, they won't be set off by your bra  however, to be on the safe side, I will not wear any next time! :rotfl:

TRAVEL TIP: do not wear undewire bras .... beware of possible embarrasment!

My bras have set off detection. Especially the hand held ones. If you notice, it beeps louder when it's near your upper torso.

Most security personnell ask me if I'm wearing underwire and I tell them and they re-scan me and then let me go.

So, it's not at all a silly question. If you feel insecure about it, then wear a bra that does not have underwire in it and you will breeze right through!

I think it just depends on the actual airport.
When I fly to WDW I fly out of Pittsburgh and into Orlando- I've got a pretty big chest (DDD) and I've never had a problem. I always have to wear underwires.. have since I was in 7th grade.
Basically, I don't think Orlando/Pit's metal detectors are very sensitive because I've got metal in my ears, my bra and a belly button ring- and I've never had a problem!

I think your right on that it depends on the airport. I travel a few times a month to various airports. Some I always have to make sure to take off metal (like my necklace, earing, etc.) other...or most airports, I havn't had any problem with anything like underwires or clips, or jewelery.

THIS IS NOT A SILLY QUESTION!! :rotfl:

Mine set off the security alarm at O'Hare. We were on our way to Puerto Rico & it was about 4 am - I wasn't really thinking. Boy was I surprised!

From now on, I always wear a bra without underwires when I fly. It was pretty embarrassing getting patted down. They were nice about it, but still.....

Be warned!! It can happen -

Lives4Disney :earsgirl:

Happened to me a few years ago on a trip from NY's JFK to Vegas. They wanded me, patted me down and they still were not satisfied. Finally some burly "woman" went in for the kill and verified it was my bra.
I was mortified but of course my DH couldn't contain his laughter as he watched from the sidelines with our friends.

nope - but I set off the metal detectors with a pair of flip flops on my way home from AZ last year. Weird! There's nothing to the stinking shoe and it still causes a hassle!

Whenever I am on a long flight (like to CA or HI from PA), I don't wear a bra. It's just more comfy on a long flight. I make sure to dress so you can't tell (big sweatshirt, etc.), but I'm a A+/B-, so I can get away with it.

I'm all about comfort when I'm cramped on a plane!

OMG...this is such a funny thread. They have those detectors torqued up so high we'll all be walking through completely naked soon. I always take my shoes off and put them through the x-ray...maybe now I'll just throw my bra in there too??

Yesterday on Regis and Kelly, Kelly Ripa was talking about how she wear a t shirt, pants with no snaps, flip flops, no jewelry, and no bra (she also added "and I don't need one") to the airport because she's doesn't want the metal detector to go off. I was thinking of this thread.
