I don't know if you all remember, but a week before Christmas my cousin's husband was in a terrible auto accident. He was hit broadside. Someone ran a red light. There is NOTHING left of the front of his car. He had no injuries..but, he was in a coma. He had swelling in his brain that they weren't able to stop by removing part of the skull because the injury was to the brain stem... and the entire brain swelled. Anyway, he's been in a coma ever since.
Well, last few weeks..he's been moving. Not opening his eyes..but moving his arms..his hands. More than just the reflex or response to pain type of things.
My cousin just called me, as she just left the hospital. When she got to his room, she told him. "Come on Jeff, move your head to right and give me a kiss". Sure enough..he moves his head to the right and puckers up to kiss her!
She was so excited..the nurse was in the room and he told her to ask Jeff to do it again..and then again. Then the nurse gave him a cup to hold..and told him to hold it tight and bring it to his lips. HE DID IT! On his own...didn't drop it!
Just Monday, I was having coffee with my cousin after seeing a lawyer regarding her options for Jeffs medical care. She told me sort of sheepishly..that she thought Jeff was responding to her kiss the night before. She said she kissed him, and he seemed to be kissing her back, and then she thought he sort of smiled. Only, she wasn't sure if he really responded or if she was just hoping that he would. It just broke my heart to hear her say this.
Well...tonight..there was no mistaking his movements. They were quite deliberate..and he was able to distinguish between his left and his right when they asked him to move his hands. Staff was comming in from all over the hospital to see this. They were so excited for her.
Added to her heartache, is her father. My uncle fell and broke his leg two weeks ago..and he's in the same hospital as Jeff. They put them on the same floor so as to make it easier for my cousin. My uncle happened to be in the room when Jeff was moving, and he just broke down and cried like a baby. He loves him like a son.
I surely don't know what's to come, but today..was a good day for Jeff...and surely a good day for my cousin. Any prayers sent out to Jeff..would be so appreciated. He's a good man..and he's trying to make his way back to his devoted wife.
