UPDATE in # 34..... Tell me about Wegman's Supermarket, please.

I had a friend in Rochester, NY that I went to visit in the early 90's. All he talked about was Wegman's. I went in and wasn't impressed. We have Ukrops here (an institution in Richmond, a wonderful grocery chain).

Fast forward to this past May and I happened upon the Wegman's in Fairfax, VA. Oh. My. God. It is is FABULOUS. DH was even bowled over and that is saying something!

Sadly, I doubt there is ever going to be a Wegman's here in my neck of the woods (b/c of Ukrops). I've heard that Mr. Wegman and Mr. Ukrop are friends and that Wegman's actually based their store on Ukrops (a rumor that I don't know if it is true or not).

I'm in Holland so I'm somewhat closer to that one. I'll be checking in out when it opens!

We just had 1 open in northern MD. and like Disney they also should have people movers. We have some strip malls that are smaller.

Ok...technically the store is called Wegmans Food and Pharmacy. Second the Hunt Valley store (near Baltimore) is our largest store ever. I was down there in August to do some training of the new hires and I was floored by the design and size. Listed below are the next 3 stores to open plus dates. Not exacty sure when 2nd quarter is for us, I'm guessing start of summer. Not sure if I'll get to any of these stores to train because my kids are in school then.

Mt Laurel, NJ
March 19, 2006 (tentative)

Cherry Hill, NJ
2nd quarter 2006

Warrington, PA
Fall 2006

I am so happy to see all the Wegmans lovers here. I take pride in the fact that I work for them and have for almost 15 years. They are a remarkable company to work for. What I am surprised about is those that say we are more expensive than other stores, because I know in my area we usually are the cheapest in grocery prices. Our special items (like prepared foods and food court items) might be higher, but our quality and food prep standards are higher, so I'll gladly pay the higher price. I was a Wegmans shopper long before i worked for them, I went to work with them because I loved shopping there.

Daxx's Wife here! We have Wegman's stores here in Buffalo, NY and I have to say that it's the only place I shop! After the Wegman's experience, I hate setting foot in the other grocery stores, locally!!! If there's something on sale at Tops that I need, I make Daxx go there to get it! I just feel more "at home" at Wegman's ... feel it's cleaner and nicer than the other supermarkets in this area!

OK, not announced, even on the Wegman site, but supposedly it is going to be in the shopping center in Oaks with the Lowes and Target and the movie theater. I met the owner of the land / property. ( he also owns the land where my Dunkin Donuts is located ). We talked a few times about business and he said talks were in discussion to create a shopping area like Main Street @ Exton... and it "might" include a Wegman's if everything can be worked out.

So maybe I overstated..... wishful thinking, I guess! :teeth: But fingers crossed!

My nephew worked at the Exton Wegmans then. They are putting in a brand spanking new Wegman in Mt. Laurel NJ.. I can't wait to check it out. Its next to a nice new Target... my life is complete!

Where is the Cherry Hill one going tobe ? that is very very very near me.. and I think I know where is going to be!!!!! That would be extremely close.

If you wind up training for Mt. Laurel or Cherry Hill, let me know. That is close to me and other people. We could have a mini meet.

Whenever we are up in Buffalo/Rochester area, I have to hit Wegmans!!! My 2 personal faves in the Buffalo area are the one near the Boulevard Mall and the other one on Sheridan Drive in Williamsville. They are huge, immaculately clean, and you can find everything there! Much better than Tops IMO.
Their subs in the deli rock and the pizza and wings are very good.
I love PUBLIX but wish they would put a Wegs here!

I also wanted to add that Wegmans is listed as one of the best companies to work for in America. Forbes list I believe.

wow Wegman's is a great store. We have THREE stores within 20 miles of each other. I live probably 5 miles from one store and work a couple blocks from another store. I can run on my lunch hour. OY - Wegman's Hoagies are the best. There prices are good - comparable to other stores in the area. Where you get in trouble is there variety and fresh baked goodies, and meats. You tend to spend more if you go down that darn bakery aisle. I spend more there giving the appearance of it costing more because of all the good stuff there. My DD loves the white ghiradelli hot chocolate they make at the coffee area.

That reminds me I need to go to Wegman's Coke products on sale 12 pack for $1.99, and wegman's paper towels 8 pk for $2.99. :teeth:

its a grocery store for goodness sake,, we have none of them here, and in all honesty if we did i would still shop at our local stores instead, its nice to walk in and be greated by name, by the management, to have the grocery boys know my car and take the stuff out while i visit with management or checkers, and i bet i can get every thing they sell there at our local shops, for about the same money, and a lot fresher, especially the meats and produce. the rest is groceries,, martha white is martha white whether it comes from some huge chain or the corner store down the street, plus that at the corner store,, the money i spend all stays in town and goes back into my local comunity not into some corperate big wigs pockets.

Froggy, it is a different world here in PA. There are NO local grocery stores in my area. The last one was Genuardis and that was bought out by Safeway, tho they kept the Genuardi name.

To answer questions: this is all we have on our website for
Cherry Hill, NJ

Opening June 11, 2006 (tentative) it had no address listed. Probably won't be there at all for training because of when opening is, that is when my girls are still in school and I won't go out of town when they are in school.

ChristmasElf: I work at the store by the Boulevard Mall, I am usually hanging out by the register area or service desk area.

Froggy: Yes, we are just a grocery store: But I know customers by name, I have gotten christmas cards and gifts from some of them! While we are a corporation, we are a family owned business. When I'm out in the mall, or anywhere else and our customers see me, they come up and say hi to me, or I say hi to them. While we have 69 stores, it is still run like a "small" business. We are a store, but we are so much more. We don't have a board of directors, we are family run, and they care about the employees. And I do have to say that I seriously doubt that you would find fresher or better produce anywhere except right out of the ground. We started out as a produce stand in the streets of Rochester and produce is our big thing. That is one of the reasons we won't go too far down south, it would take to long to ship things from our warehouses and that cuts down on freshness. We are so concerned with freshness that we even own our own egg farm.

Yep - it was the #1 employer in the country on the most recent list of Forbes.

A letter I just now got from Wegman's, literally one minute ago:

Dear Customer
We received your e-mail asking us to consider building a store in Norristown. Thank you for the compliment. We are very pleased that you have enjoyed shopping in our stores enough to want to see a Wegmans in your community. At this time we have no plans to build in Norristown, however, we have made our long range planning committee aware of your suggestion.

What follows is a list of planned stores and potential sites:

Mt. Laurel, NJ, Early 2006
Cherry Hill, NJ, 2006
Warrington, PA, 2006
Turnersville (Washington Township), NJ, To Be Determined
Leesburg, VA, To Be Determined
Thank you again.

So what is the difference? Unless they call it Wegman's Grocery. They sell food and other stuff right? In my area we tend to say supermarket generically. To each their own, I guess, unless they call themselve's a "gocery" store.

Just being funny. Upstate NY Thing. Kinda like pop and soda? :confused3
Nevermind :rotfl2:

We don't have any "local" grocers in Charlottesville either, just the chains (Food Lion, Giant, Kroger, Whole Foods and Harris Teeter). We have some small mom & pop type conveniece stores but grocery items are very limited and expensive. There is a family grocery chain in the Richmond area and I really wish they would open a store in this area, their stores are really nice and they even take your groceries to the car and put them in for you. I was shocked the first time I shopped there, it was definitely an unusual experience. Here in Charlottesville you can't even drive up to the front of the store and have a clerk put the groceries in for you like they used to years ago. Sorry- back to original programming.....

I'm not suprised that they wouldn't do it in Norristown. When I think of Norristown I think of Main Street proper. (I used to go to Norristown High School from Wayne/KOP weekly--so I went down main street).

I'm sorry thats the first thing I think of is Main Street Proper area in Norristown. However the store could do well in West Norriton. (did I spell that right?)

That is Ukrops.

I love Wegmans and used to shop there regularly when we lived in WNY. Now I don't have one close by so I have to shop at Shop-Rite (just OK). Anyway, even Wegmans store brand products are very good, and Bison brand chip dip is the best!! ::yes::

How great to see all these fellow Wegmans' lovers! We first heard about it while visiting family in Buffalo - we asked where to go to lunch and they told us Wegmans. We looked at eachother like "a GROCERY store?!?! for lunch?!?!" Everyone said you HAVE to get a sub. And that's when I like to say our lives changed. Wegmans is a shopping experience. We were lucky to get one down in VA that I go to about 5 - 7 times a week (we're really close by). Their prices are better on name brand items, but this is actually the one place where I buy the "store" brand because I actually trust it. Their breads and "Chef's Creations" are amazing and we have a huge Chinese buffet. If we have guests from out of town the first place we take them to is Wegmans and they are just blown away. I think the best parts are the employees attitude and the style of the store. You don't have the glaring white plain floor and the bright lights over head. Eventhough it's so huge, it feels so cozy and gourmet.
