DH heard something whining outside this morning at 4:30 am. thought he was dreaming but got up to check it out. DASH was waiting to get back in !! 19 days gone and he just shows up ! He still had part of the lead on his collar, about 8 inches of it, and is so skinny you can see all of his ribs and is covered in ticks but home !! The kids will be celebrating when they find this out.

-- Background -- I live in the mountains of NH. I live in the old center of towns so my neighbors are really close to me. I can see inside each of their houses from at least one room in my house if not more. Yards do not have fences and everyone is friendly. Most of us have dogs and those who don't have outdoor cats. the dogs are all allowed to run free for the most part. One of my dogs is not allowed to cuz he will start a fight with any other dog that comes on our property or even looks at him. We let him out on the runner or on a leash. Dash goes on the runner unless we are outside or our neighbors dog is outside waiting for him to come play. Then we let Dash out free. Dash always comes when called, even in the mist of trying to play tag with one of the cats or one of the many wild animals we have around. I just have to call his name or whistle and he is here. I could walk Dash anywhere without a leash and he would stay right beside me. Across the street from me there are woods, thick woods with lots of wildlife. Bears most years but none in my yard for the last 2 seasons that anyone has seen. Most of the other wildlife stays in the woods and we have never seen them. neighbors routinely walk in these woods and never a problem. ---
Monday morning I was super tired after a very long weekend involving baseball games and travel that required more than 6 hours in the car on Sunday alone. I got everyone off to work/school and then went back to bed. I felt really bad about having to crate my dog, Dash, because we hadn't been home most of the weekend already for him to run around. I swore I would bring him to baseball this week cuz he would love it. He loves being around people. I tried to fall asleep but Dash kept doing his yipping thing he does when unhappy about being crated. It's just a yip about every 15 minutes or so. I yelled for him to shut up and he did. I finally fell asleep. I woke up at 12:20 came out in the kitchen and put my other dog out to pee and then got Dash out of his crate for his turn.
It was 12:30 as I put the lead on him to go out on the runner. (both dogs use the runner, no fences where I live) I walked 14 steps into my living room to see my answering machine blinking. I listened to the messages an during the last one I heard Dash freaking out barking and growling outside. Dash never freaks like that, only my other dog does. I figured he wanted in really bad so I went back to the door to let him in. I could still hear him barking until I got into the kitchen, 4 steps from the door.
I opened the door to see the runner gone from view. I didn't see Dash either or hear him. I stepped outside onto the steps and started calling. No noise and no Dash. I walked to the front door and grabbed shoes and went out front and started walking around calling and whistling. I couldn't see him anywhere or hear him. the runner was on the ground snapped in half and the lead attached to Dash's collar was missing as was he. The lead was 10 feet long and had the wheels on it from the runner. I went inside and threw a shirt on over my PJ top and grabbed a sweatshirt and went back out. I talked to a lot of my neighbors who were out working in their yards. Nobody heard or saw anything. (none of my immediate neighbors were home, the ones that were were at least 3 houses away.) After about an hour of canvasing the neighborhood up both directions on my street, I went back in and put on jeans and long socks. As I walked into the house, I saw that one of my neighbors had grabbed his ATV and headed into the woods, the one place I hadn't ventured yet.
I sprayed myself down with bug spray and headed outside. I saw that another neighbor had come home from work and let his dog out. His dog was Dash's best friend so I asked if I could take her with me to look in the woods. She came with me and we searched every trail and everywhere else I could get to for any sign. I was calling and whistling the whole time. I never heard a sound. no whimpering, whining, or barking. Come to think of it, didn't hear any birds either, just creaking trees. Weird ! I dropped back off the other dog and got my keys to start driving to look farther. I covered about 2 miles around me.
Dash is 2 years old and the sweetest dog. He would never harm a fly. Everyone keeps saying that maybe he chased something into the woods and he'll be back. But if he did that, I would have seen/heard him, or at least the lead dragging metal on pavement across the street, since I stepped outside right away. If he could have come back, he would have.
The only options left is that someone/something took him. That would explain the freaking out and the quick disappearance. But I heard no cars and no neighbors even saw any car going down the street. And who would take a dog ?? I have barely seen him bark at strangers, unless they are running past him, nevermind freak. If it was something then where is the fur or blood ?
I made up flyers and put them around. gave all the details about him and added a picture. If someone took him then I want him back and them to know I'm looking. Also, if they don't return him I want them to know he is severely allergic to beef and that he will get really sick. But everyone up here notices when neighbors get new pets. It's unavoidable. I dropped my flyer off at the library yesterday to find out that a cougar had been sighted in the area. it was seen about 3 miles from me but still close enough. Then I talk to my friend who lives less than a mile from me to find that she saw it in her backyard.
I hope someone took him and an animal didn't get him. Everyone says dogs have come back after months and to just wait. It is killing me every moment he is gone. I want to be out there looking every minute but am now afraid to go in the woods alone. I don't own weapons so I have none to bring with me and don't want to bring my other dog cuz I couldn't deal if something happened to him too. I don't think that is the case tho. I have this feeling he is gone for good. I cannot imagine taking his crate down or moving his food bowl or any of his toys.
Every night since, before I go to bed I call outside for him. the first night I stayed up until 4 am going outside every 15 minutes to call for him. Every time I tried to sleep I would cry uncontrollably. I finally fell asleep cuz I was soo tired. last night I was up til 11, calling outside for him again every time I looked at or passed by the door I would open it and step outside and call. Today I am still calling but something inside says we will never see him again. I feel horrible that I wasn't at the door faster. I kept him crated when all he wanted was out. I can't find him or even clues to find him. I will not give up but don't think it will help me.
