Our old vacuum just died. I'm thinking of getting a Dyson DC33 at Costco, but I'm a bit reluctant to spend $370 on a vacuum. We do have dogs, and I've heard the Dysons are really good with pet hair.

I figure I'm going to spend at least $150 for any halfway decent vacuum that will pick up pet hair, so maybe it's worthwhile to just go ahead and shell out the extra cash for the Dyson?

UPDATE:

I found a Dyson DC14 at Costco for $250 so I went ahead and bought it. I think this is the cheapest price I'm going to find - the same vacuum on Amazon was $350 and the only other places I saw with the DC14 at this price only have refurbished models.

Anyway, I'm keeping it in the box until the black Friday sales in case there's a better deal and I need to return it.

I had the same feeling but then we went ahead and got a Dyson...it is worth it!

Check the Black Friday ads. I saw a couple of Dysons on sale but I can't remember which stores they were.

JUst checked---Kohls has the DC33 for $299 on Black Friday. Best Buy has Dysons on sale too in their Black Friday ad.

I believe Consumer Reports is not a fan. I have an online membership and can look at their review for you if you'd like.

Never had one.

I do know that Oreck was was worth the extra dough. Sucks better, lasts longer, is SO light, goes under tons of crap and does a decent job on edges.

I went through so many kinda crappy vacuums. Love this one.

It is totally worth it. We got ours for our wedding shower, that was 6 years ago. The first time we vacuumed it was like we never vacuumed before and we had to clean it out twice, and the amount of carpets wasn't that big.

I've had one for ten years and it's still going strong... Worth every penny IMHO

Thanks for this question. I was just thinking about the same thing.
I'll need a new vacuum within the next year- my Shark doesn't have much suction any longer (about 4 years old). So I have been trying to read a little about why I would want to spend so much money on a Dyson.

Keep the opinions coming please. :thumbsup2

We got a Dyson and really like it. It does a great job and I love not having to deal with bags.
We had a Kirby for 10 years before, and our new dyson works much better. It gets so much stuff up, its kinda scary to think all that was hidden in the carpet :scared1:.
And works great on the cat fur from out 2 kitties. ;)

I had similar concerns but took the plunge probably almost 10 years ago now. We have one of the purple "Animal" models I think a DC 15 with the ball. It is quite simply the best vacuum I've ever used.

The only downside is that the thing is heavy! Carrying up and down the stairs can be a chore, but when using it you never notice the heft due to the wonderful ball rolling motion.

As someone else stated the first time we used it it looked like we'd never vacuumed before and I was amazed.

I highly recommend them.

I love our Dyson and I don't think I could have another type of vaccuum again. I have had the cord replaced on ours after my little dog decided to chew threw it. I have 2 dogs one Lab and one Havenese.

Definately check the black friday ads.

I love after you get done vaccuuming with a Dyson you don't have the "smell" of a vaccuum cleaner. I hope this makes sense.

We have had ours about 5 or 6 years and it was worth the price. About 6 months ago it stopped sucking and I thought I would have to buy a new one. Called the toll free number on the canister and Dyson shipped me a postage paid box. I boxed it up and sent it back for free repair and they shipped it back to my door. I was shocked with the amazing customer service!

I didn't like my Dyson and it kept breaking down. I just got rid of it and bought another vacuum. I wouldn't waste my money.

With 5 cats, we bought the Dyson animal. O.com had a refurb for $200 off. It is scary the amount of hair and dust I empty. It does better on hard floors than any prior cheap vacuum.

I don't have one, but my daughter (with two dogs who shed) has one and swears by it. I know Consumer Reports isn't a fan, but I go for one.

We have two big hairy dogs and a two story house. We looked at both the Dyson and the Oreck. We decided on the Oreck. I have heard good things about the Dyson Animal but can't speak to it. Will speak about the Oreck. I really like it. It has no problem picking up dog hair. It is light which is nice for doing the stairs and moving the vaccum from downstairs to upstairs. The other thing we like is the bags. Yes it is an additional expense but the bagless I had (not a dyson so might not be the same) really was hard to get all the dust out. i was constantly shaking it and just scattering dust in the garage. I prefer the extra expense and the bad as it holds all the dirt and dust. Plus when we have had issues with the vaccum (burnt out a belt on the rod from all the dog fur) we had no issues getting it fixed and it was under warranty.

Happy shopping!

Where would you get a dyson fixed if not under warranty? Having issues after 5 years with hose suction that I can't figure out....

I when our other vacuum died, I just googled vacuum repair and our city name and found a vacuum repair shop. Not sure how much the repair would cost (I decided to just buy the Dyson rather than try to repair our old vacuum right now), but the repair shop I found serviced all major brands (Miele, Oreck, etc.).
