In the parks, I can see how people justify an additional expense. The usual character meets are long lines in the hot sun. The character meals are sold out because there are tremendous numbers of people in the park and a limited number of venues and employees.
This is not the case on the cruise. I think putting more burden on the already overworked CM's to do an upscale character breakfast for those cruisers that can afford it, is a sad idea. I do think that it would end the free character breakfast.
I think when there are a lot of people stretching their budget to just cruise with Disney and then someone suggests an upcharge, you should be ready for some disagreement. I don't think you should get so defensive about it, though. You had an idea, you floated it out here and it didn't fly.
Disney should just build another cruise ship for their passengers with unlimited discretionary income. It would have nothing but concierge cabins, with verandas of course, and all dining would be like Palo and Remy. You could purchase any amount of time with your very own character. They could sit down with you at meals, hang out with you at the pool and beach and even stay in your cabin, if you so desire. You could have your very own photographer to follow you constantly onboard and at Castaway Cay, especially while lounging in your seaside Cabana. The concierge hosts would be able to get absolutely every thing you would want, including having purchased your new clothes that are waiting in your cabin.
Sounds preposterous to most people, but for some, I dare say this will be appealing.
