Unusual spelling of names?

I work at a social service agency in Philadelphia and we have a Le-a too! the funny thing is the name is in a Jodi Piccault book! does that make it acceptable now???

a few others i remember are:

Nevadie = Neva die
Tackahara
Teaquala = Tequila
Hennesy
God (yes!!!) and his brother...
Allah (?)
Lethal

There are so many more, i wish i could remember!

I work with a Tequila. And I went to college with a Dacri. She was so proud of her name. She told me her dad named her after his favorite drink--and she thought "Dacri" was the correct spelling.

DH's aunt is named Cairn..... pronouced Karen! I've even asked....is it Carin.... Nope!

Does she live in Kansas? Does she think there's noplace like home? Who would do that? Does she have a sister named Spaniel? A brother named Poodle? What is wrong with people?

that is (i think) swedish version of Karen. nothing to do with a dog or canine.:lmao:

Cairn, like pebble? Stone?

I believe the Swedish version is Carin, not Cairn. I had a Danish au pair named Carin when I was a kid - pronounced Ka-reen.

Could be, have been doing some serious geneology and some of the names I am running across sometimes don't conform to todays 'accepted" spellings"

Just thought of another unusual name I've come across in my work. I worked for a travel agency and the leader of a group I was booking on a tour was named Early L. Person. Being the nosy, tactless young person I was then, I said "Early is a very unusual name; what does the L stand for?" Mr. Person grinned sheepishly and said that he had been born two months prematurely and his father thought it would be a hoot to call him "Early Little Person." Real name, I saw his passport.

Also, my older sister dodged a bullet when my mother refused to let her mother name my sister; her choice? Zoobianne, pronounced Zoo-bee-ANN. My mother agreed to the "anne" part and named sister Dianne.

Queen Colleen

I have a "uniquely" spelled name but it's the Greek spelling of it and I'm 1/2 Greek so it's not unique all to me.

Is it pronounced Bailey? Just have never seen that spelling before.

Yes , pronounced "Bailey". When I first met her I asked her last name. When I saw it spelled I just didn't connect the two - I thought it was something else.

Lol, I am loving this thread!!! I just had a baby girl and named her Lilyana (pronounced Lilyana, not Lilyanna like Anne ;))...EVERYONE tried convincing me to spell it differently, these are some of the suggestions. Lyllianna, Lillionna, Lillyonna, Lylly-anna, Lili-anna, Lillyannaa and various other combinations adding extra Ls, Ns, As, and swapping the Ys and Is. I think I spelled it normal, right??? These people, my friends and family, kind of have me second-guessing myself lol! It drove me NUTS from the time we decided on a name until she was finally born.

I absolutly HATE odd/different spellings for these kids, I also don't like the weird names that celebrities are naming their kids, Inspektor Pilot, Tallulah, Apple, Suri and all of the other dumb names out there! You know the other kids in school are making fun of them and teasing them for it :headache:

O, yeah, at work in another department, there is a lady named Princess, yes like Di. I have heard soooo many more dumb names out there thru my job and, I hate to say it, but 99% of the time, when I see the names on some of the paperwork that comes in and I have NO idea how to even BEGIN to pronounce it, they are black. I guess it's an ethnic thing, but why would you do that to your kid???

So, I take it your baby's name is pronounced lily-ON-ah? I would have said lily-ANN-ah.

Oh, and Tallulah is an old southern name.

Something that good cannot be evil:rotfl2: There is sweet tea and then there is southern sweet tea. We are talking like 2 cups of sugar per gallon of water. YUM!

I thought it was two cups of sugar per glass :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:

I can't hate on the south, like I said, because the food was soooooooooooo good and sooooooooooooooooo fried. But make it a healthier Pepsi to drink.

Ok, have to ask - why not just Liliana?

Wait. Whoa. Back up. Hold the phone. Hang on.

Glycerine? Like... glycerine?

You know someone, personally, who was named or named their child Glycerine? No... I refuse to believe this is true. Sorta.

Really? Glycerine?! And his/her brother Lye? And their sister Ethanol? And...

No siblings. And it's pronounced glis-er-een. She's a girl and her friends call her Glyce (glis-ee).

Excuse me, it's pronounced Ee-THAN-yel. :rotfl2:

Were they related to the Chemical Brothers?

ford family

Wonder if he had a twin named nitro?

My sister claims there is an old song about a woman named Glycerine and she wonders if this is where the parents got the name?? I have no idea. But, yes, it's very real.

I have an odd spelling of a common name - Amie. Was always a pain saying "with an i.e." Over the years I have people assume it was Annie and Arnie. Now, I don't usually bother correcting people unless it is on something official.

As for unusual names. I just met a family whos oldest son is Heistheway.

The band Bush had a song of that name in the mid 90s... But the title wasn't a reference to a person... More like the explosiveness of the relationship the lead singer was writing about. Hopefully that girl will have better relationships than the one in the song!!

You got me interested so I looked it up. I'm gonna bet this is where they got the name from. The timing is about right, it would have been a relatively new song when she was born.

I have a girl on my bus whose name is Lilliana (pronounced Lilly-ONa) For some reason though, when I see your daughter's name, it looks like it would be pronounced Lilli-ANNa. Not sure if it's the one L or because it has the Y. Either way, it's a pretty name though.

I think many people get their name mispronounced with names like that. My friend's daughter's name is Brianna. Some people call her Bree-ONa and some people call her Bree-ANNa. Funny thing is though, some people call her both (including her mother) LOL Some days I hear her calling her Bree-ONa and some days I hear her calling her Bree-ANNa. Another thing with my friend is that her youngest son is called Jacob. I remember when he was a toddler she flat out REFUSED to have anyone call him "Jake" for short. Now that's he's about 12 or so, I hear her call him Jake more than Jacob. LOL

I cannot imagine why a parent would want to stick their kids with a name that is going to cause them nothing but grief for their entire life.

"Heistheway"??? Seriously????? Guess who's changing his name to "Bill" the second he turns 18. If I were him, I'd be standing at the courthouse door when it opened that day.

This.

Even Zowie Bowie changed to 'Joe' and, you know, his dad is David Bowie. It's not like he was living in a cul de sac never mingling with the cooler or more eccentric folk.

I don't get the impulse to begin with but regardless, do the facts that the kid will end up having to spell it for everyone, having people perpetually get it wrong (or right, as in the case of 'Jeweleigha' and the like), and having their resumes trashed when people see some idiocy on the top not even spur parents to reconsider?
