"My daughter came home and said she saw him standing outside with his arms in the air," said Foreman.

...the boy is shown holding two safety cones. Foreman said her son was forced to hold the position, arms-locked and staring into the sun, for 15 minutes. Foreman said he couldn't do it, giving up when he wiped some sweat off his forehead.

A second news story from another parent at that same school...

http://www.foxcarolina.com/story/30...on-over-recess-detention-at-elementary-school
"They didn't tell us what was going on with our children," said his mom, Cynthia Amos.

She's the latest parent to say the school made her son hold safety cones as a form of punishment.

"I was kind of astounded. I was like, 'I can't see anybody doing anything like this to a child,'" said Amos.

In a 9News report Tuesday, a picture was broadcasted of a third grader reenacting what his mother said was his recess detention. But unlike the boy seen standing in the picture, Gabreil said he had to hold cones while also doing the "invisible chair."

"Every time when my legs locked up, I had to do it again the next day," said Amos.

And he said he got called names by Principal JoAn Cook.

"She usually said, 'You're a little weakling,'" the boy said.

Gabreil said he watched as his classmates in detention struggled too, some of them crying.

"They were talking to each other and they said, 'I never want to come back to this school,'" he said.

This allegedly happened when Gabreil was in third grade last year. But his mom just found out when he opened up Wednesday night following the report.

The reason she's just finding out is because Gabreil said he was afraid to tell.

"They said if I told my parents that I would have five more days of it," he said.

These accounts sound more like scenes out of Cool Hand Luke, than an elementary school.

Where the heck do they come up with these type of punishments? Lets make the people who incite these things do them. I would be contacting an atty as well.

How insane. My daughter's elementary school has recess detention, but it means that a child has to stay indoors and read/write while his/her classmates go outside to play.

Assuming the reports are true: it is absolutely out of line, especially for younger elementary ages kids (out of line all together, but even more so given the ages).

Sounds fishy to me - only info is from some kids, except for the one quote from the principal. Both articles are so poorly written that I'm questioning the legitimacy of all involved. For the parent quoted "Me and..." Sorry, you lost my sympathy on that one!

Recess detention here means something totally different. If the kids hit that level of trouble (takes more than one strike), they "walk the fence" (there is a fence surrounding their play areas). Punishment can be everything from 5 minutes to the whole 25 minute period. They are still getting fresh air and exercise.

If it's bad weather, and they have to be indoors, the detention is served by sitting in the hallway, and doing worksheets.

I'm ok with the teachers doing this.

EDIT FOR CLARITY I'm ok with my son's teachers, not the teachers in the link. Sorry if any confusion

Assuming that the kids are telling the truth, this is inappropriate.

They should just bring back paddling. Seemed effective for many years.
I disagree that it is a good tool for schools to use, but regardless, it is still legal and fairly widely used in Louisiana. I was actually wondering if this is a district which recently banned CP and teachers are taking it out on the kids with these other punishments (again, assuming what is being reported is truth)

Our schools do this aame outside detention.

Now I sometimes am ok with alternative punishments...But this is too much

Examples of what I meant:
* I had a teacher in high school that if you did something that could get you detention you got a choice of something like 30 min detention or you could do 10 pushups/x time of iron cross/some other physical punishment. Which went up the more often you did things that would get you this type of punishment. Also if you really couldn't do that in a row he would sometimes let you split it if he knew you tried (5 pushups then and 5 more in a few hours). I was ok with this since it was a choice.

* My area for a while for non-violent crimes committed by teenagers that would result in time in Juvenile detention would give the teen a choice to instead have to be part of a group that would put on a shakespeare play. The teen was mandated to go to each rehearsal and participate, if the directors of the program reported that they weren't they would go back to the original sentence. Again they had the choice... although I think everyone given the choice choose to do the play. Because even if you hated it soo much you considered that prison it wasn't full time.

* Some of my middle school teachers instead of making kids go to official school detention (which goes on your record, gets announced to the school in the morning, and lasted 45 min) would do teachers detention. Which generally involved doing something for that teacher but was much shorter. For example cleaning all the desks, cleaning the erasers and the chalk/white board, copying and organizing worksheets etc. NOrmally these only lasted 20 min.

It is an outrage. I could maybe understand if a kid offered to do something like this as penance, and them allowing it (which is still questionable in my opinion), but what they did is just not acceptable. Missing recess should be the punishment... make them just sit and watch, or do busywork if they must have them do something during that time.

I didn't vote because while I definitely believe things like holding cones in the air to be excessive, that's not what "recess detention" means where I am. It just means you have to stay inside with the kids who are making up work (or just wait by the fence for the first five minutes of recess if it was minor).

I substitute teach sometimes, and I actually hate to take recess away. - I really do think running around for a bit helps kids learn better. But there's not much else teachers are allowed to do. Things I would prefer (not hitting, either - things like writing "I will not pull Suzy's hair" 25 times) have been banned for other reasons.

I like the walking punishment. Keeping kids from being physically active seems like a good way to have them continue to act up so that's a great compromise.

I agree with PollyananaMom--often the thing a child who is struggling to behave needs most is time to run off a little energy and let their mind wander.

My son got recess detention a lot but it was just not getting to go outside or having to sit by the teacher, he liked to talk - alot. I would get detention in high school, it was the kind like on The Breakfast Club except it was during study hall. You just had to sit in the room with all the other kids and be quiet and supposedly do your homework. A lot of kids would take the time to pass notes, read a good book or nap - not saying I was one of them mind you but my son didn't get his enjoyment of talking from his dad. I'm old enough that paddling was allowed, so is my son while in elementary and middle school. It was only used in extreme cases like fighting, thank goodness not talking or my poor bottom would have stayed red.
