unused day on 5 hopper pass

I have 5 day disney passes with one day left which my family did not use. When I purchased the 5 day passes I was told they never expire. The passes are about 4 years old. I am going to Orlando in December and would like to use the passes to go to Animal Kingdom. My question is one of my children is now 12, will Disney allow her to use her child pass from 4 years ago or will I have to pay the difference. Will I just be able to slide the pass through the machine or do I have do get it revalidated because it is old? Thanks for any info.

I know if the child is just a few years older they let it go - but I think you will need to check with guest services at the park when you arrive.

you will probably be charged extra.

Now I thought I read somewhere (probably here on the DIS) that if you buy a child's hopper, but don't use all the days, and now they are no longer a "child", that Disney will upgrade them to an adult for free. (I know that's a poor grammatical sentence - couldn't figure out a better way to word it!)

yes if the child is still young 10 or 11 - but I don't know about the 12 year old - that is why you ask at guest services - rather than be refused at the gate.

The child doesn't have to be "still young". If you have a leftover child's ticket from 20 years ago, you can have it exchanged for the equivilent adult pass now as long as the then child (who would now be in their 20's) is with you and their date of birth fits in with the original usage of the ticket.

There is no charge to have this exchange done.
