we've had some umm dry spells thanks to hubby medications

But he spoke up to his doc and she changed it
(oh yeah baby, the banana guy is perfect for this!!)

At least your mom told you.. I was handed a book "If you have any questions... umm.. talk to your sister"

Hubby did the "talk" with the boys, alone in the car.

And we bought few books, did a little speech to present it to them and let it go at that.

5th grade is still the standard for school based sex ed-- though it peeves me to no end to be restritcted to "just say no" as it hasn't made much of a dent on the number of teens having sex, getting preg, having STD's

I agree, I think the "Just Say No" campaign was totally moronic. Not that I think we should tell them "Go ahead, you're gonna do it anyway!"

When I had the class, it was basic biology, nothing about emotion or desire. I guess that's something to definitely cover at home. I've heard there are good books, will have to look into those...yikes! In just a few years!

I hate the programs that make kids sign an abstinence pledge. It hasn't stopped kids from having sex a few years later, and kids aren't really of an age we ask them to sign legal contracts (knowing they're too young), so why have them sign something like that? It's ridiculous.

I remember having a conversation with my cousins, two of whom had pre-teen kids. One said she did not discuss *** or teach them anything about it, she just made her girls promise to be abstinent until marriage. The other (her sister) said she wanted her kids to be well informed and also to feel like they could come to her with any question, so she told them about ***, STDs, the whole nine yards. She said she hoped that they would make smart decisions because it was a big deal, but she said it's a personal decision.

So guess whose children got pregnant as teenagers?

hmmm, good question...

Counseling, education (with adaptation) ???

Which is why they have social security in place, they consider your age/training/ education/ previous career and your medical info. And you're right.. it is limiting to not have use of an arm/hand..

Then again, technology is getting better-- you could get equipment to type for you by verbal command (adaptation).

It sucks, Lynn. I was wondering the same thing when I was going through all that. At the time I was doing customer service work for a bank's loan center, so on the phone and computer all day long. Hello? Computer! Typing!

I learned to type one-handed for awhile, but that's not so good for the one working hand, either.

I know for us .. money is tight when we rely on only SSDI.
ummmm what else.. oh yeah, if you're disabled you get Medicare, and if you work just a few hours a month (heck do childcare as an aide part time), you can get state medical assistance (to cover the copays and drugs).

Don't consider it a hand out! You've earned every penny of help thru your years of being a good worker and contributing to the tax rolls!

To tell you the truth, I'm sure my mom was relieved to have SOMEBODY ELSE explain it to me. I remember driving with my mom alone somewhere (which NEVER happened, I never had my mom to myself) after the class, and she asked if I had any questions. She looked really uncomfortable, so I said no.

I thought for a minute, then asked, "Mom, is it true about how people have ***?" She blushed and said yes.

I thought some more, shook my head and said, "That's really gross. I can't believe people have to do that to have a baby." She blushed some more, then said quietly, "Actually... Ummm, it's kinda fun."

And THAT was our one and only talk on that subject.


OK, since you HEART me to death... What are your symptoms now? Horrific pain like your hand has been put through a meatgrinder? Or totally numb so that you can't feel touch, pressure, heat or cold or pain?

That was similar to mine, but without the fun part added in! We did NOT talk about anything at all really, and I never wanted to ask her, sooooo uncomfortable!!

ohh yeah, another thought..

Vocational rehab gives you all sorts of tests to determine your interests, abilities, physical limitations... I forgot Eloy had to go to Univ of MN to take a whole series of testing to see what he could and couldn't do. Including checking his manual dexterity,He had to screw things together as a test, kept dropping the pieces with his left/dialysis arm

He was so frustrated with it, he was ambidextrious on certain tasks before (he did his art/drawing with his left). It was interesting to see his results-- at that point he didn't know his let arm was affected. It's probabaly because of the surgeries he had on it to make his access.


and ummmmmmmm, Eloy's only 34-- he's been on disability for 12 years now, and at this point... he may be continuing on disability-- health is important.
