So... On a brighter note, How excited are you about your trip? I am CRAZY excited!!!:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

We actually did fly one year later. We flew to Maui with DS(then 2.) We timed it to go around our anniversary (9/12) but I did NOT want to fly on 9/11, I couldn't have dealt with the anxiety. Not that the date probably really matters, you know? They have no problem striking any other day of the year... :confused3

But when we were going through airport security, they pulled us aside to check through our luggage. The guy was asking what I thought were standard questions, and I swear, it was like DH was on drugs, he just took forever to answer, it was like in slo-mo! So I'd snap an answer out. Finally after like 5 questions, the security guy pulled me aside and told me to wait "over there", quite a ways away from DH and the luggage. I was pissed! I'm the one who packed, I can answer the damn questions about what's in there, you yahoo!

Ahhhh, yes. But I'm not the one whose father is from the Middle East...

We got "randomly" selected to be searched both coming and going. :sad2:

Hmmm... Yes, i can see why then. It would tick me off too, dh would have NO freaking clue what was packed in anything!

I think we will all remeber that day with clarity into our old age.

I was at a home visit with the lead teacher at a latino family's home. (Head Start does a home visit with every child enrolled in the program, the kids meet their teacher, we get a feel on thier home life and do a crap load of paperwork).
We had no clue that anything was happening, the family were a bit slow to open the door and they apologized but they were watching the news.

We slog thru the paperwork (father of family transplating for wife) with TV playing in backgorund. When the first tower fell... The family was upset.. they had just moved to MN, still had family that worked near ground zero. I still can picture the father with a look of shock "did it fall? Did it really fall?" we watched and confirmed yes it had fallen.
My lead teahcer pushed on and had them finish paperwork.. in my mind I'm thinking.. this can wait, we don't need to do this right now.
The mother is frantically calling family, but of course she could not get thru.

We finish up in a hurry and make our way back to our class site.. and then we sat and watched the news unfold.

Looking back, I don't think the lead teacher was aware of the significance of what had happened.

My hubby calls, they had cancelled his classes at the community college.. "should we get the kids out of school? what should we do??"
Decided to just continue on with our day as it was.
The school district had lock down procedures, figured they were safe there.. and we lived only two blocks away.. easy enough to get them if needed.

As the days and weeks after the tragedy, we made sure to protect the little ones in our classroom. Many of our families were from India, a few from Bosnia.. majority of our morning class were Muslim. We made the extra effort to welcome families with open arms.
For the children, it was a year of learning about different cultures, sharing family life, being proud to be American.

Footnote: By the end of the school year, the father of the Latino family we visited took his citizen test.. and became a US Citizen.

It was a great school year.

OMG, less than 4 weeks now!!! I can't believe it!

DH keeps asking me, "So we're all set, right? We have all the tickets and arrangements that need to be made?" Uhhhhh... I think so. Well, except for the transportation to/from the airport.

There's a thing with the airline where you can check in online, and do some sort of pre-... I don't know what they call it, but basically give them your personal information early so we wouldn't run into the problem we did last time (where DS3 was on the "no fly" list.)

I'm thinking we should do that, especially since our flight is butt-early in the morning. Do you do the online check in? Oh, wait. We'd still have to wait in line to check our luggage, then go through the security check. I guess it wouldn't spare us having to wait in a long line, would it? Ah, well, whatever will make it quicker and smoother...

Oh Bernice.... okay, this is me now. I have been on the verge all day, and that sent me over!!

Check in the day prior online, and when you get to the airport there is a special line you go through just to give them your luggage... We ALWAYS check in online, life is TONS easier!! Are you taking a shuttle to the airport? If you are they will drop you outside, and you can just check your luggage with the sky caps. that is the easiest way, no lines at all!!

ahhh, racial profiling.. what a grand idea.... grrr.

Hubby is Latino but has been mistaken for middle eastern descent.. we too got "profiled" the first year after 9/11.

He also had a customer (gas station) go crazy on him. He wears a hat to keep warm in winter at all times (past history of severe pneumonia),customer was pissed about something and started yelling at hubby "what are you some Muslim! Is that why you're wearing that hat?!" .. totally blew hubby away.

And if you are getting air miles with this flight.. some of the airlines give you extra bonus miles for online check in:thumbsup2

One year I signed up everyone for miles, and registered for a special bonus.. did online check in for everyone.. and got TONS of bonus miles. Got a free flight with that deal!

Hey guys it's official. they changed it to Nov 10. Plus side is I get to see Christina (I think)

We are trying to figure out if we can go in October too. Dh has worked so hard and I would love to give him a vacation.

See October we had 4 days scheduled in the parks. November we have 2 if that. Hannah concert is Nov 9 so we are going to that then driving at 2am to get to DL at 8am. i'm afraid Morgan will be exhausted but we are NOT skipping the concert and at least she can sleep in the car. IF we go over in October too we will get AP's again since it's $10 away from the price of both trips. However we dont really want them because it will be too easy to go back and blow more money that we need for our Nov 08 trip to WDW.

On top of all this we are getting our floors finally done 1st week of October. I'm frantically painting the kitchen cabinets just like I did the bathroom ones in the spring so we can put the new floors in.

Whooo I guess that is my update!

oh is it Andrea's birthday today???? How ironic if it is because I called her and left her a message out of the blue today but I have no clue!

If so

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANDREA!

This was one of the best and worst things about the outcome.

The worst was that idiots started spewing their racial hatred against anyone who even looked darker skinned or wore any different kind of clothing. People were attacked, shops were burned, even on the school grounds kids were saying horrible things to other kids. Sikhs from India, for pete's sake, were being attacked! They're NOT Muslim! I think I even heard of Latinos and other darker-skinned people being threatened.

DH's family is not Muslim, and he doesn't really look Middle Eastern unless you know what Lebanese men look like, but the name is a dead give-away. One of our co-workers who was Pakistani was vaguely threatened at work, I was completely shocked!

But it also was the best in terms of people coming together as a nation. I've always been proud to be an American (not always proud of the administration, however), and never have I seen so many people feel the same way and show it! And people seemed to go out of their way to help out their neighbor, it was amazing.

Well, Garcia is one of the more common Arab names, ya know... :rotfl2:

Well, at least it wasn't canceled altogether. I'm sad I won't be able to see Morgan's performance. And I do hope you can still come in October, that would be great! And Christina will be thrilled!
