Unplanned family trip

My DH, DD(3) and I spent 4 nights at YC last week on an unplanned family trip. I had to go to Florida unexpectedly for a funeral. Since I was going to be out of the office at least 4 days, I simply took Friday and started planning. At first it looked hopeless. I called Reservations and tried all our favorite hotels, AKL, Poly, CB, but no rooms available for the time period I wanted. Then we moved on to others that we had talked about trying at some point -GF, CR, WL, POR, POFQ, CSR - and still nothing. Well, not strictly true - there was a 2 bedroom suite at CR for almost $800 a night. I was getting desperate, when the CM found a room at YC. I had stayed at BC 12 years ago and liked it, so I said ok.

So, after the funeral, my DD and I drove up from Ft. Myers to YC and checked in. DH was flying in to MCO later that afternoon and taking Magical Express over. Check in was a breeze and I got a complimentary upgrade from a standard room to one with a water view. The room was ready even though it was only noon, pleasant and very clean with a very nice balcony looking over the lagoon. We settled in and then went to Beaches and Cream for lunch. We were seated immediately, but I do have to say that on that occassion the service was slow. Our waitress was very nice, but had too many tables to handle. My DD shared my sundae and loved it. Then we went for a swim in the children's play section of Stormalong Bay. I like the way they have renovated it with a seperate children's play section. By the time we had had enough, it was time for her nap, so we went back to the room and both fell asleep. My husband got to the hotel around 5:30, and after showing him the room, we walked over to the International Gate at EPCOT to pick up our APs and walked around World Showcase for a bit. Then we had one of the best dinners I've eaten at WDW at the Yachtsman Steakhouse. Everything was cooked (or not cooked in my case) just as requested. The drinks were excellent and the wine spot on.

Our first day we spent at MK for our DD. We did the teacups and Small World and Jungle Cruise and Dumbo and Carosel and Pirates. Then she wanted to go on Barnstormer. So over we walked and got on line with something like a 10 minute wait. But she announced she had to go potty, so back we went, hit the ladies' room and when we got back the line for Barnstormer was really long. So I told DD no and that's when the fun (?) began. She threw a tantrum. So DH and I elected to leave and go back to YC for lunch and her nap. It was the last good nap she'd have. That evening we went to Spoodles and were amazed at how good it was.

Friday morning we spent at AKL. DD loves Lion King, so we did Festival of the Lion King and then Safari, followed by Rafiki's Planetwatch. DD loved seeing the animals, but the heat and humidity started to get to her, and us. So about 12 noon we stopped to feed the DD and afterwards went back to YC for a rest. DD fell asleep and so did I. DH after a short lie down decided to watch TV and turned it on. That was the end of DD's nap and boy did it show in her behavour that evening. We went over to 9 Dragons for dinner (because we could get her rice, a favorite food) and she ate so much hot and sour soup that she got sick. DH started grumbling that he was tired of her and wanted time to himself. So I said ok, I'd take her back to the hotel and he could come back when he wanted. But that wasn't good enough. He wanted me with him. Well, it's a twofer at this point hon. She's too young to go to the kids' clubs and I sure as heck can't leave her in the room on her own. In the end we watched Illuminations and went back to the hotel. Saturday we decided was for us adults. We wandered around Food and Wine Festival, sampling food and wines and just generally having a good time. DD was pretty good. We ate lunch at Tangerine and then went back to the hotel to swim. DH suddenly decided that he was in too much pain to swim, so I took DD down on my own. After a few minutes he appeared and announced that he wanted to go in the hot tub and that I would have to watch DD - well duh, what did he think I was doing? Our plans that evening were dinner at Kona Cafe followed by the MK, which was open to 11 pm. But DD had had enough of crowds and just wanted to play so after dinner, we simply went back to the hotel.

We checked out Sunday and then went over to MGM for a few hours. Saw Beauty and the Beast, which DD loved. I wanted to take her to the Muppets but DH kept insisting that she wouldn't keep the 3d glasses on. He also wanted to get to the airport. So we left. I spent 3 hours in MCO listening to him ***** that he was tired of DD's behavour, chatter and me. Then he started on the hotel, how he had not liked it, never wanted to stay there again and why had I picked it?

We finally got home and needless to say, it was a long hour and three quarters flight. Both DH and DD settled down when we got home. They both like to travel, complain when they can't because of my schedule but are happy to get home. We are going back in February, but it won't be to YC.

I can recognize that it's a lovely hotel, but I prefer AKL or Poly. They give the illusion of more space, which we really like. Still SAB was great and YC's location near EPCOT was very nice.

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for posting.

DH doesn't relise the scope of parenthood, and even though you were at the heart of "things that are focused on childhood and its memories" he still couldn;t get it.

Don't know the personal circumstances, but on balance, it sounds wrong for me - dump the guy!!!!

Sorry your husband was such a grump. It sounds as if your dd had a wonderful trip - and your dh can redeem himself when you go back in February. :)

Seems the on-site hotels were really full - did you find crowd levels reflecting that?

Thanks for posting your report!
