Unofficial Maryland DVC Member Listing

Actually, BRAC may not have the impact that was originally stated. Many military folks are opting for retirement before relocation to Maryland. Gov't is having a hard time convincing people to move here, one big reason is housing is too expensive. Most of the people that would come are not from big income military positions.

Most of the positions to affect Harford/Cecil are civilian positions at APG....so a lot of people will relocate here (not necessarily prior employees from Monmouth), we don't ahve a lot of depth in the Engineering/Chemical units that they are moving into our areas. Not to mention infrastructure issues of increased traffic on the roadways up here. APG doesn't have any direct access to 95, which is one of the proposals in the works, to put a direct access without side roads in. We already have about 25k civilians commuting onto the post every day, that number is looking to double by the time BRAC and the new GATE (Industrial park at APG) kicks in.

I don't think the changes to Ft Meade will have a huge impact on the area, because of the reasons you listed.

I will agree about the number of actual transfer of employees may be less then anticipated. But I also think that the number of employees that say they won't come wil change. Its easy to say I'm not going 3-4 years out, but as the day comes and you realize your job and all its benifits will be gone, plus there will not be a comparable job to replace then one you lost. Push comes to shove, and they will move. The number of jobs being transferred are still going to be the same. That being the case, the new hires will still have to live within reasonable distance to the base. The housing costs in Harford and Cecil Counties are far less then New Jesery where most of the jobs are relocating from.

My dad is retired from the US Navy and he's considering moving out of MD. The state taxes his retirement pay and property taxes are out of control. He's thinking about moving to TN or NC where they are more friendly towards retirees.

Unless they repeal this idiotic sales tax on computer services I and most of my family may join him. We're all techies making our living via computer. I'm the most mobile since I'm a web designer. Just give me a laptop and an internet connection and I can work anywhere in the world (and have).

Of course idiotic legislators at the state house don't understand how IT works. Ya gotta love 'em. Squander their days away on slots, set another high spending budget and then ask "Oh where can we get the extra funds? Oh yeah, let's tax those workers most likely to flee the state and leave us bankrupt."

:confused3

Oops, I meant to post to you maddog. I'm right down the road from you off of 140, in Westminster. :goodvibes

Hey- even though you meant to say that to maddogg- we are pretty close- Reisterstown is right between Westinster- where you are, and Sparks- where I am.

Hey maddogg- we go to Reisterstown every weekend for soccer at that new totally wicked sports complex in Reisterstown- that place is so great. It is only about 10 miles from my house.

Yeah I am about 5 min away from that but I have never been, pretty sad I know. Question, I am bringing my 6 year old son back to Disney next June and thinking about where to stay. I have 200 points at AK but is that too far away for a young child. Should I try and get something at VWL?

I don't come here very frequently, just here more lately as I plan out my upcoming October trip.

I'm from Millersville and our home resort is SSR.

I can count for MD as well. I currently live in Ridgeley, WV which is a 10 minute walk over a bridge to Western MD where I still consider my home. My family also owns a business in W. Md that has been around for 30 years. I still say I'm a Marylander and even still pay in to the Chesapeake Water Fund after taxes every year even though I have to do it manually now, lol! I also grew up spending summers on the Eastern Shore in Ocean City, MD/Fenwick Island, DE!

I see one person on the list from W. Md so hello neighbor!
