Universally mourned

Tom Brokaw? I know I was devestated when Peter Jennings died, but he had warning. Now when Tim Russert died, I was SO crushed. I loved him.
I'm sure there is someone we are missing. But I dont know who that would be.

Not heard of any of those. Seem to be starting to mean universal as across the US, so I'll bow out of this one now. :thumbsup2

While I think in the US, Neil Armstrong and John Glenn will be very noteworthy passings, I don't think worldwide they will be such.

I have to agree that no one will be universally mourned but some will be more noteworthy than others. I think Queen Elizabeth will be one of those since the implications of her death will change things in the UK where hardly anyone alive really remembers a time when she WASN'T queen. Her passing will be more of an end of an era (and the controversy surrounding who will get the crown).

When Diana died, it was nonstop coverage for a few weeks. I guess that is the closest thing we have in recent history of universal 'mourning'.

I meant the ones in the PP, Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings and Tim Russert. Stupid, but not THAT stupid....

Who would you name as being universally mourned? I mean besides the Queen? Who is known well enough and loved well enough in the UK as well as the rest of the world?

I really think that most answers given are going to be determined by the country or area one is from. So, the people I would name wouldn't necessarily be someone of extreme importance to someone from another country.

Most of the ones you are saying you haven't heard of or their death wasn't/won't be a major news story in the UK, I can understand. I am a bit surprised about Ronald Regan though.

Someone mentioned Prince William. I think he may be well known enough but is he well loved enough. I don't think he is loved the way his mother was. Maybe in the UK but not here anyway.

So where at in the UK are you? It wasn't a 1 night news thing and his closeness to Margaret Thatcher would certainly have made it a semi-big deal in the UK as well. He had the biggest Presidential funeral in ages, complete with a State Ceremony and a major lying in State for 1-2 days b4 that. And of I missed most of the main funeral but I think I made it back in time for the actual burial at his museum. Not that I expect you to mourn him, but I am surprised you missed it.

Now missing Betty White or Michael Jordan would be completely understandable.

I can't remember much at all about Reagan's passing either. Maybe because he was out of office for so long, and had been ill that it wasn't quite as newsworthy outside the U.S as you might expect? I wouldn't expect Mrs Thatcher's eventual passing to have prolonged coverage in the U.S media, for the same reasons, regardless of the impact in the UK.

I would agree with Nelson Mandella, Neil Armstrong and perhaps Queen Elizabeth II.

Tom Brokaw is not known outside the US. Neither were Peter J. nor Tim R.

Perhaps they were known in some partd of Canada (I don't know) but they were really known in one place only.

Prince William -like a PP said, has been off the radar for so long, I doubt many people even think about him.

Someone mentioned Steve Irwin. Yes, he was mourned all over. His death had a bigger impact than I thought it would have.

I agree that it would be difficult to find someone who would be mourned by everyone but I do agree that there are some people who touched enough lives one way or another to be mourned by a large number of people.

Those who have already passed:
-Princess Diana
-Mother Theresa
-Ronald Regan
-John Lennon
-Elvis

My list of those still alive:
-Buzz Aldrin
-Neil Armstrong
-John Glenn
-Muhammad Ali
-Paul McCartney
-Dahli Llama
-Nelson Mandela

I pretty much agree with this list. I'm just not so sure about the astronauts. I realize the enomous impact they had -though I was too young to really remember it- but it was so long ago that I don't know if many younger people -esp abroad- even know their names.

But the rest, they sure are widely known and loved globally. It will be a big deal when it happens. I wish all of them many good healthy years of life.
