Universally mourned

To be fair, Billy Graham is in a fragile state of health and at an advanced age. At that age, you've got a right to expect the young whippersnappers of the next generation to come to you.

No disagreements there. I certainly think that Obama wanted to keep up the Presidential record than he had to go to Billy. But I have no love for Obama so it doesn't much matter to me that he went. I like Billy way more.

I agree. I took the "universally mourned" to mean mourned all over the world, but it seems that some are taking it as mourned by everyone. That's just impossible.

So did I. Reagan and Pope John Paul were mourned world wide, but both had flaws and detractors as any important person does. You won't ever find every single living person mourning 1 dead person together. Just will never happen.

I was thinking Betty White. :)

Paul McCartney

Good examples.

I don't think pop starts or athletes are important enough for the world to morn them, so I won't even count them.

I don't think that any one person is more important than another, so I'm going to wholeheartedly disagree with this. And I think they're probably among the most recognizable people so I think these are the people who might be mourned the most. Which is, of course, not the same thing as being universally mourned. But I think these are the deaths we will hear the most about.

Personally, I mourn when anyone dies. I feel for their families and their friends and the people who will miss them. As far as famous people go, I mourn the fact that we won't get to experience any more of their "work".

I think some who were already mentioned (Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama) are people who should be mourned and I think they will be. I would add people like Buzz Aldrin, Norman Schwartzkopf, Colin Powell, etc may not be universally mourned but I think there would be an outpouring of grief when they die.

Others would probably be more universally mourned if they were to die suddenly at a young age... someone like Sandra Bullock or Michael Jordan.

i was also thinking Oprah a PP mentioned her.

I was also thinking John Travolta, I don't know anyone who doesn't like him, I love John Travolta!
Oh...Denzel Washington
Michael Jordan
Andrew Lloyd Webber

Sorry...my list is of Celebs haha

Never heard of Betty White either. And didn't even realise Reagan had died :confused3 He must have made the news over here - maybe I didn't watch that night. And sorry, PP but Michael Jordan would barely make the news over here I don't think. Not sure I could pick him out from a line up even.

This is quite interesting actually - people that you obviously consider big enough news that people worldwide would regret their death but that many people worldwide probably wouldn't even notice!

He died in 2004.

ah, ok! Sorry missed that one. One that I know will *not* be generally mourned in the UK will be his old mate Maggie Thatcher. In fact I know a lot of people that will probably throw street parties!

Neil Armstrong
John Glenn

Elton John

Elizabeth Taylor!

I seriously can't think of anyone else.

The first person I thought of was John Lennon.

Then I thought of JFK.

But that's my limited viewpoint, quite frankly.

No one would be universally mourned.

In the realm of entertainers I was thinking of Robin Williams and Bill Cosby. Bill Cosby certainly does have his detractors though.

So where at in the UK are you? It wasn't a 1 night news thing and his closeness to Margaret Thatcher would certainly have made it a semi-big deal in the UK as well. He had the biggest Presidential funeral in ages, complete with a State Ceremony and a major lying in State for 1-2 days b4 that. And of I missed most of the main funeral but I think I made it back in time for the actual burial at his museum. Not that I expect you to mourn him, but I am surprised you missed it.

Now missing Betty White or Michael Jordan would be completely understandable.

Near Cambridge. I've googled and he died in June 2004. I've been trying to work out if there was something big going on in my life then or if I was out of the country or something that I would have missed it, but I can't think of anything. Remember him being shot though, does that earn me some brownie points back? :rolleyes1

I agree that it would be difficult to find someone who would be mourned by everyone but I do agree that there are some people who touched enough lives one way or another to be mourned by a large number of people.

Those who have already passed:
-Princess Diana
-Mother Theresa
-Ronald Regan
-John Lennon
-Elvis

My list of those still alive:
-Buzz Aldrin
-Neil Armstrong
-John Glenn
-Muhammad Ali
-Paul McCartney
-Dahli Llama
-Nelson Mandela

There really are very few people who are on the world stage enough to be known universally. Most of them are politicians, which about guarantees that about half the world will disagree with their views/actions. But I think I've got one, who at least right now, would be universally mourned.

Prince William

He's well-known enough to qualify. He hasn't done anything offensive to anyone that I know of, hasn't taken on controversial positions. People seem inclined to like him because of his mother and because of his loss of her. Certainly, if he passed as a young man, the effect would be much stronger.

I don't think anyone will be mourned universally. There are so many places in the world without access to common media on a daily basis so I think a lot of truly famous people aren't reaching a global population. They're reaching the vast majority, but definitely not everyone.

I think Steve Irwin was mourned very widely by many walks of life. He hasn't been mentioned yet.

Bono from U2 maybe.

Other than that I am having a really hard time thinking of anyone who wouldn't have some type of controversy attached to their name.

Yes but I think he needs to make more of an impact on the world. I haven't heard about him or from him in at least 5 years, other than when a young girl has a crush on him.

He's been kept out of the spotlight a lot while he's been doing his army training. He does do occasional official things, but he's been qualifying as a helicopter pilot here and we saw coverage over here of him being awarded his wings. Buzz this side of the pond is for a summer engagement and winter wedding, so press coverage will go through the roof if that happens!
