I believe the ticket windows open 30 minutes prior to park opening. The lines can be very long so you might want to consider purchasing your tickets online and doing the electronic pick up option at the Will Call kiosks. It's very easy to do and there's usually no line. All you would need is your credit card and confirmation number.
Since they are still doing the 1 hour early entry for hotel guests the ticket booths are open at that time as well, at least they have been when we were there.
I think the kiosk open about the same time as the regular windows, just more of them and easy to use (usually )

Instead of the above, why don't you just print out your ticket "free of charge"
at home and go right to the turnstile. It will be printed on regular paper, but what difference does that make. I printed mine last week for our trip this week.
I agree about buying the tickets on the web and printing them out at home. I went in Oct 2009 and waited in the ticket line about 30 minutes. Since then, I've gone twice more and printed the tickets at home. On my recent trip two weeks ago, the ticket lines looked even longer than in 2009. Printing at home definitely saves some time!

It seems we always have people asking about exchanging the sheet of paper for a "regular" ticket since they don't like carrying around a sheet of paper as their ticket. They can exchange them for "regular" tickets at Guest Services. But that could take some time if GS is busy that day. Picking the tickets up saves you that time since you will receive "regular" tickets from the kiosk. But some people like to print at home.

I haven't been to US since 1997. Do I need the ticket for anything else other than entering the park? When I read that people don't like carrying around a paper ticket, I just wonder what else I would need it for. Do I have to show it to enter an attraction or something?

I am among those people. The first time I did the print-at-home thing, I was not aware of the ticket exchange option at Guest Services. So, I just carried around a full-size sheet of paper as my ticket. My assumption was that if I folded it in such a way that the barcode did not get folded, it would be okay. I'm not even sure that matters, to be honest; I just had the sense that a barcode that got folded or curled up would be harder to scan.
Nowadays I always order tickets ahead of time from Undercover Tourist. You can get a discount code in the monthly mousesavers.com e-newsletter (coming out two days from now, in fact).

Once you're in the park, you won't need to show the ticket again. I think most people would rather carry around a credit card sized ticket instead of a full sheet of paper...but that's just me.
