Universal has a "Duff-y" bear??

LOL Your rebuttal is non-sense. :upsidedow Those are SINGLE ATTRACTIONS , not a WHOLE SECTION of a park. ;)

But you missed the point of my post - Disney did not "lose" HP. ;)

You said if it wasn't Disney it didn't belong in the park, you didn't say anything about single rides vs. full section. I'd love a Star Wars section. Anyway I am sure Disney, being the gorilla in the room, didn't want to turn over the kind of creative control to JK Rowling that she doubtless demanded.

I would also LOVE a Star Wars section. As it is, I'm real excited about the redo of Star Tours.

I shouldn't let the nastiness get to me and I usually don't. It's just so pointless.

I've had a Disney CM poke fun at Universal.... I was on one of the water transports and got my camera out to take some pictures. The captain asked me for me camera, and I initially thought I wasn't allowed to take pictures, so I asked if this was the case, and he replied "yeah you can pictures of whatever you want... this isn't Universal!". It turns out he was just being nice and was going to take a picture of me and my fiancee!

That is in the Simpson's store (Quiky Mart). And that's not an actual Duffy bear. Some of you might not remember that the Simpson's ride also makes fun of Universal in both the Queue videos and also in the ride itself. There is also a joke about Seaworld. It shares its irreverence between all 3 themeparks in Orlando (Disney, Universal, and Seaworld). It's all in keeping with the Simpson's theme.

I do think Disney took one giant potshot at Universal Studios with the naming of Hollywood Studios. You have no idea how much confusion there is for many tourists. Many were already confused with MGM. We already have Universal Studios that also has a Universal Studios Hollywood. Now you throw in Hollywood Studios into the mix and many guests are confused when purchasing tickets for Universal Studios or thinking their Disney ticket works at Universal. I also know that Disney gets the same problem with guests going to Hollywood Studios with their Universal tickets. I know they had to change the name but did it have to be so close to Universal Studio's name? But that's OK, since they now have Rip Ride Rock-It which sounds similar to Rock N Rollercoaster. ;) And let's not even get into Disney buying Marvel rights.

That's in the Horror Make-up Show and they also make many wisecracks about Universal also.

:teacher: DHS only exists because Universal announced a Florida themepark. Disney then rushed to get the then Disney-MGM Studios open ahead of Universal Studios Orlando. Mickey can be a little vicious sometimes but at least we all got another theme park out of it ;)

^Yeah, and Eisner wanted to open the park so soon, he opened it with only 2 rides. Great Movie Ride, and the Backlot Tour.

.

i was at universal last week and my friend kept calling the rip ride rock it, rock n rollercoaster i didnt want to be a jerk and correcct him tho and i was pretty sure he knew they were different

One thing Universal has that Disney does not is a good, sarcastic/dry sense of humor. They're good at making people laugh and poking fun at their neighboring theme parks. They know how to be tongue in cheek, while Disney sometimes seems a bit up tight and not willing to let their figurative "hair-down".

I may just be a Universal fan boy, since I'm an annual passholder and most of you people say you visit "Once every five years". I love Disney and Universal, but somethings Universal just does better. Somethings Disney does better. It's all a matter of opinion.

(And the show you guys keep referring to is the Horror Make-Up Show.

"Hey kid! I ain't gotta be nice to you, this isn't the Magic Kingdom."

I definatley agree that sometimes Universal does things better than Disney, and over the last few years this has definatley been the case.

In my opinion, Disney would have ruined the whole Harry Potter theme had it been in one of their parks, where as Universal has made possibly one of the best themed lands/rides in the world, much better than Disney has ever done(in my opinion). They've made it intense, frightening and real where as Disney always lowers intensity to appeal to everyone, including young children and the elderly. Universal sticks to the target audience of certain themes, such as Harry Potter. You wont see young children under 5 watching/reading the Harry Potter series, so why should they make a ride suitable and less frightening for young children(these are the differences between Universal and Disney).

And the only reason they were able to open before US even though they started construction after is because of the Reedy Creek Improvement District fast tracking the permits. Of course, RCID is Disney, so that's to be expected.

Every time I hear a Disneyphile claim that Disney doesn't pay any attention to their competitors I remind them that they built an entire park specifically because of those competitors.

I can't believe how people get so bent out of shape about Universal poking fun at Disney. Disney and Universal are competitors, but what is good for one is good for the other. Disney actually likes having more tourist attractions in Orlando. It gives Orlando a bigger draw. When people come to Orlando, for whatever reason, Disney usually gets a piece of the action. The fact that some people love Universal is okay, because they usually drop some money at Disney also.

Universal knows that, without WDW, they would be out of business. They have a bit of a symbiotic relationship.

What many people do not realize is that Universal and WDW work together on many projects to improve Orlando. Disney CMs and Universal staff often work the same charity events. When Gatorland had a fire, both Disney and Universal immediately sent people to help Gatorland reopen. Not only do a lot of Disney CMs also work at Universal, but those that don't have friends that do.

I know a lot of management people from WDW and from Universal. There is a rivalry between the parks, but it is a friendly rivalry. One of the Disney managers lives a few houses from me. He thought the commercial about seeing another princess was hysterical.

People need to realize that you can love Disney and still like Universal. Liking Universal won't hurt Disney in the least and Disney won't get upset knowing that you also like Universal.

Great post, I agree with this 100%! Also, as a gamer, it really reminds me of people who play one online game who absolutely hate another online game. They're both great games, but they're different games. You can love them both at the same time if you want, they won't kick you out of the fan club! :rotfl:

Universal has recognized that they are better off playing to the Young Adult/Adult crowd. Appealing to this demographic allows them to be more intense at times (think halloween, etc) and hold a higher adult entertainment value. Disney has always been a family experience and cannot break that mold or risk alienating their own fan base.

I think about Alien Encounter, it was an awesome experience at Disney, but just did not fit with their demographic. I think it would do extremely well at Universal, but at Disney too many people took small children on it, which just completely freaked them out....even with all the warnings and CM's trying to convince them it was not for kids. So now, we are stuck with the dumbed down Stitch's Great Escape, taking some of the terrifying out of the ride (although a lot of kids still freak out, not nearly as bad as Alien Encounter).

I really like Universal and Disney both. For us it comes down to:

1) Being able to ride things together. Most rides are so intense at Universal that we can't ride them together because different things make us motion sick. (I can't do coasters and DH can't do simulators) We end up going to the park and just walking around rather than splitting up.

2) Universal just closes too early 90% of the time! With our work schedule we are able to spend much more time at Disney.

That said we have year passes to both at the moment. Just not renewing the Universal ones this time.
