universal express ticket purchased vs universal express for staying on site

So, my wife and I were wondering, what's the difference between the Universal Express ticket that you purchase at the gate (or whereever) and the Universal Express privileges that you receive for staying at one of the three on-site hotels?

The one you buy at the gate is only good for one ride per attraction. At the hotels, it is pretty much unlimited (unless during peak summer times)
