I know that the tradition is to have the mothers light the two tapers at the beginning of the ceremony. In my case I really don't expect to have DBF's mom there, and even if she was, I wouldn't want to give her any responsibility. My next thought is to have the godmothers light the tapers, but then I realized, "Um, I'm DBF's godmother..."

What would you guys do in my situation? We could have two other people who are important to us light the candles. I was thinking my Aunt and his best friend's mom or best friend's wife. I think the symbolism of my mom lighting my candle would need to be matched with someone equally as important for him, but I'm not sure who. If only I wasn't his godmother, then this would be so much easier!

Well I had my Dh's mom light his side of the candle but my mom was my moh and so I had my Aunt light mine. I do not think there are any rules...whoever you feel best represents that side of the family!

Each of you could light them...symbolizing your individual lives before the ceremony and then the center after the vows to symbolize the individual lives joined.

Both my mom and my DF mom have passed away. We will either have our dad's light each candle or I think the best idea is we will each light one candle at the beginning of our ceremony.

in light of such loss, this is lovely!

we are not doing unity candles, but, who does your df want to represent his side?

We're not quite to that point yet. He has been dealing with so much crap with his mother for the past month. I've just been think about possibilities. I kind of like the idea of us lighting them, or maybe the Moh and BM.

You can have whoever you want to light the candle don't feel you have to have a particular person.
My mum walked me down the aisle as my father doesn't pay a big part in my life, so I had him to light the candle along with DH's mother.
