United On-Line Check in Question

Four tickets purchased for 4 pasenegers all on one United Airlines credit card. Two people (my mother-in-law and I will) will get first bag free because her United card weas used to buy tickets. The other two people will pay.

I want to use on-line check in tomororw and print baording passes for all 4 people. Will it allow me to not put down a bag for the other two people and they can pay for it at airport but still check them in and print boarding pass?

Yes. Just select no checked bags when you do online check-in. Then at the airport, you can check all your bags and pay for the other two people. If your airport has a line just for checked in passengers to check bags, use that.

If the bags qualify as carry-ons then you may want to take them the entire way to the gate. At that point they will check them for free to save space on the plane. Otherwise just check in as no bags and then check them in at the airport front desk.

Why would you do this? If they are small enough for carry-ons, why check them? Keep in mind that it is not an automatic free check at the gate; it's only free if the gate agents/s offer and they often do not.

If you have a high boarding number there will most likely not be any room left in the overheads. I see people check bags like this all the time. I fly United for business about every 6 weeks and almost every flight has people heading back up to the front of the plane because there is no overhead room left.

Yes, when you o online check-in, enter two bags, then if you want to check more, simply bring them to the airport as well. UA is happy to collect the bag fees
