booking to go glasgow to orlando MCO via Newark with UNITED, does anyone know if the bags we check go straight through to orlando (then glasgow on way home) or do we have to collect them and re-check them onto the joining flight? and what are they like to travel with, food, entertainment, comfort etc?? thank you all!!! ;)

It's 10 years since we last flew with United but are flying with them this summer so I can't comment on food, comfort etc.

When you fly into the US you will go through customs and border control in Newark and you will have to collect your bags and recheck them for the onward flight. On the way home your bags will be checked all the way to Glasgow and you won't need to pick them up at your connecting airport.

We did united in 2011 from EDI via EWR. It's checked straight through, but you have to collect your luggage after customs and do a bag drop. It is literally a drop so it doesn't take any time at all. Very easy, very well marked, not far to walk to your connection and all round my favorite route and airline thus far.

Economy was fine and perfectly comfortable. We were given a complimentary upgrade to whatever they call it (Business First - I don't recall as it was Continental when we flew) on the way back but we were fine in economy on the way over.

Lots of delays with hurricanes when we flew - both ways - and they looked after us amazingly well. Also DD was ill on the flight home and they were so incredible running rings around us to help that I wrote to the airline with compliments. Enjoy :)

fantastic!! thank you 2tiggies!!

We flew with them in 2012 from Birmingham to MCO via EWR. We thought they were brilliant.
The planes were comfy, food is exactly what you expect, not the worse though as even my mum had some and thats saying something! They were just generally great. Had no gripes at all. Booked with them as my flight to get to Orlando for my ICP this year!

ohh this is all so great to hear, always a bit wary when going with an airline none of us have travelled with before.
thank you :thumbsup2

I have been looking at them as an option from Aberdeen does anyone know how much they charge for the economy plus seats?

they are my airline of choice, when we fly to the states.
the planes are comfy, even in economy & that was when i was alot bigger, than i am now.the IFE is always good, with alot of choice & the cabin crew always polite.
when we flew to hawaii, the captain, pulled us to one side, when we were getting off & said to the grandaughter, that he had been told, she had been a good girl,on the flight,so he gave her a present & asked her to marry him.she was only 6 & she told him, that she didn't think her dad would be happy,so she would have to say no.he didn't half laugh, but shes 12 now & still remembers it.
i wouldn't hesitate,to fly with them again

Oddly enough, been looking at United ourselves as it's just SOOOO much cheaper for this year, and with their good rep among fellow DISers, i'm inclined to go with them. Do a dummy booking on their website, put in your traveller names and details, then on the select seats page it allows you to select the economy plus seats and tells you the charge in $, once all flights are seated go to the last page where it asks for your card details it gives you the overall total in GBP with USD for the upgrade, hit the little conversion link underneath and add that to the gbp total. For ours (LHR - MCO via Newark out Houston back), it works out about £170 per person if every flight leg is upped.

Perfect thanks for the info I was worried if I do that they might have thought it was a serious booking lol. Tried to find out on the website but the info was pretty poor and there is not a number you can call.

We flew from Glasgow with Continental to MCO in 99, 01-06, 10, and then again last year once they were branding under United just to Newark. We've always had a great experience with them, although, that was the Continental days.

Food has always been decent, and out of Newark its really good - helps they part own the catering company of course. Usual chicken or beef fare from Glasgow, and then a snack box before you land with hot sandwich, crisps and a brownie. Coming back its the same with a warm croissant and fruit for breakfast. Free soft drinks but you'll have to pay for the alcohol. The flights to / from Orlando will have buy on board food.

The inflight entertainment system they have now is excellent, a really wide choice of films and TV shows - including some from here. In a trip report I did for a site, I noted 181 albums 175 shows and 45 films from last year. Depending what you end up on going down to Orlando you'll have the same as that or DirectTV where you pay something like $7 to watch live TV, with a huge amount of channels to choose from - and that isnt bad value when you think about it.

Comfort wise again they are good, seats comfy enough, and plenty room, even the seats with the boxes underneath and im 6'2. We last year coming home went for the Economy Plus seats , just as it was the night flight, but there is no need to pay for more room as such as there is plenty.

As has been said, on arrival at Newark you will collect your bags, dump them and off you go.

If you get lucky, you'll arrive at terminal C - the United terminal, where you'll have a 10/15 min walk to immigration, queue there, down an escalator, and collect your bags. When you exit the hall you hand in the customs form, down a ramp, and you drop your bags off there. Turn around from there for the stairs / lift up to the security area. Once through that then thats you, but check the boards as the gates can be bad for chaning there.

However, more often the last while the Glasgow and other first flights have been going to Terminal B, and you'll do all the above, before catching the monorail over to Terminal C. It is a bit of a faff but not too time consuming.

When you come back, you wont see your bags again till Glasgow, and you'll arrive into and depart from Terminal C. You'll also have more time to spend, as you step off the plane, and can walk to the other gate - there is no security to go through.

Newark Terminal C is a really nice terminal, especially the newer part. Best place to eat, if you like pizza, is one of the Famous Famigilia pizza places.

Last march i was $129 for an exit seat with recline, other seats were $99. I think the price can depend on how busy / time of year / day / length of flight etc. The other bonus of that section is that with a row of seats taken out, and the rest moved, all now have a window, which wasnt the case before.

wow 'sjfc99' thank you for such a detailed response, this is perfect!!!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

we are now having 24 hours in new york, our connecting flight wont be until the next day so we will have to collect our bags for the hotel, hopefully we can get through security and bag check quick to enable more time in the city!

Thats quite alrite!

Yeah, well, all you'll have to do is collect your bags if your going into New York. If its on time the Glasgow flight is one of the first to arrive, and so usually not too busy at immigration. We went to terminal B last time, and were maybe an hour or so - but a massive line that kept moving. Used to be great at Terminal C as handling only Continental flights, the Glasgow was first to arrive and seen us off plane, through immigration and bags in half an hour. Likewise, when your going for your other flight, check-in - loads of self-serve desks that are super easy to use and then up to security.

I noticed when I was first searching before I booked with them that a most, if not all, the GLA flights went to Terminal B. We prefer EDI and those all seemed to go t Terminal C, which was a doddle

Hope nothings changed - I am hoping to use them again. They were also in the process of rebranding when we flew with them as Continental in late 2011 so I hope the experience is similar to what we enjoyed :)

In the winter the GLA flight went to B and summer it was C. Believe it was to do with staffing of immigration. Now seems to be most the year, its still not a hassle. The morning EDI flight seems to be a hit or miss, the afternoon is C.

That said the first couple of years we had to swap, and no real hassle as such.

Experience should be the same, certainly was last March. The only thing with them is the price, that said we're flying Virgin this year who were cheapest compared to Aer Lingus (who really were excellent), US and Continental/United.
