I have friends that are going to be visiting Canada for a few days this summer. We're meeting up in Niagara Falls. I would like to introduce them to a few things that are uniquely Canadian. So far I can think of:
- poutine
- Nanaimo bars
- ketchup chips
- Smarties
- kinder eggs (that they open here due to being illegal to take across the border.)

I'm sure there is a lot more. Suggestions?

Thanks!!

Maynards Wine Gums and Swedish Berries. Macintosh Toffee. All dressed chips and Hickory Sticks. Tim Hortons Timbits. Hawkins Cheesies.

I don't think these are uniquely Canadian but I associate these things with our country:
- Fiddleheads (in season, I believe)
- Ice wine
- Five-pin bowling
- Beer Store where your order comes in from somewhere in the back
- Montreal Smoked Meat

I suppose it's too warm for curling?

Oh gosh this post is making me homesick! Lots of great ideas already. I second the all-dressed chips and beaver tails. Lots of visits to Tim's. Mundare sausage (is this a thing outside of Alberta?).

This may sound weird, but I also really miss Canadian Chinese food. It's totally different from the Americanized Chinese food in the States.

As a CBC, I'm curious - what would you say is the difference between Chinese-Canadian and Chinese-American food? I have nothing against either, I'm just genuinely curious.

(Side note: yes, many Chinese-American/Canadian restaurants have a "secret menu", or will make something more "authentic" so long as you know what you want)

They may be hard to find in the USA, but Smarties & Kinder Eggs are not Canadian.

True , BUT there is a HUGE difference between CDN smarties and US smarties .. ours ... theirs. AND i think the comment about Kinder Eggs is that they will be confiscated at the border ... reasoning given "there are small parts that can choke a child" SERIOUSLY?? that means they are contra-band?

Yes, @Donald - my hero you are quite right. It is the Canadian chocolate Smarties I am referring to.

And yes, it is illegal for Kinder Eggs to be imported into the US. They may be found in the US but if so, they are there illegally. I thought my friend's children might enjoy them as I'm guessing they've never had them before.

My point is that Smarties and Kinder Suprise are both manufactured and sold in countries around the world.

The fact that they are available here and not in the USA does not make them Canadian.

little rant, Kinder Eggs contra-band due to choking, but have all the guns you want cause thats safe.UGGGh.

Anyway, you mentioned ketchup chips, always find it hard to find salt and vinegar chips. Love the Mrs.Vickies style.
Also not easy to find in Ontario, but big in the east coast is peanut butter pie, or butterscotch pie. Yum
