Unique Baby Girls names??

I'm a Michelle, DH is Jason, we had at least two or three of each in every class we've ever been in! As a result, we wanted unique, but not strange names.
I'm rather partial to Zoe, but it's becoming more popular these days. Other names we considered: Marissa, Morgan, Claire, Rose.

Congratulations! That is a pretty name, but, well, that spelling looks like the name is Mickey-La, like micky mouse. Probably others will think that as well. Just wanted to let you know, sorry.

I thought the same thing when I saw it. Michaela is such a pretty name, I don't think you need to mispell it to be unique. Also phonetically, for the rest of her life in school, the teachers are going to read it off the list as "Mic-Key-La or Mickey-La"

I guess I just don't like "alternative " spellings of names. I don't think "unique" when I see them, I think "Too bad, Mom and Dad were bad spellers"

I am a few years off from having children but I love this board for all the unique names and hearing people's opinions. My cousin and his wife are having a baby in Feb and have chosen the names Kiley for a girl (I forget the middle name but it is after her grandmother and not sure how they are going to spell it), or Owen Martin for a boy (Martin after my cousin's father and grandfather who passed away, we have a ton of Martin middle names and a first name in the family because of them). I am so excited for them because I love both names so much...can't wait for the new addition to our family!!

I'll add my girls names to the list. Some of them are plain/common. Some of their middle names are a little less common. Naming six girls was alot of fun, and we let the older dds name each one below them.

My daughter's name is Kama, pronounced Kay-ma. It means love. We heard it in a song and knew that would be the name of our daughter. She really doesn't have a hard time with it at all. Most people tell her it is beautiful and really fits her.

I would like to respectfully submit my darling daughter's name to the list. I also wanted a name that was not overused, slightly unique, but not way out there. I went to my inspiration in all aspects of life, William Shakespeare. I looked at all of the Shakespeare heroines' names and chose my favorite, Miranda. Miranda was Prospero's daughter in THE TEMPEST. She is famous for the quote that inspired Aldous Huxley - "O brave new world that has such people in it". The name means "Worthy of Admiration". I looked up the name's popularity on the Social Security website, and it has never broken the top 50, but has never been lower than about 150 in popularity.

My daughter is now 2 and a half, and I must say, the response I have received when people ask her name has been nothing but praise. Everyone compliments the name in a way that I find very interesting. "What a pretty name!" they say, in a tone of voice that sounds to me like they haven't heard that name often, and are surprised that they haven't. Quite honestly, I'm surprised Miranda isn't very popular, because I think it is the most beautiful name in the world. Several children's book authors seem to agree, because I have found 6 picture books featuring Miranda as the title character:

Miranda's Umbrella
Miranda's Ghosts
Miranda the Explorer
Miranda the Castaway

There is also a young reader's Miranda series in paperback that I plan to buy for my little girl when she gets a little older.

Miranda to me, is a beautiful name that grows with a child. As a young girl, it is sweet and full of life, and as she gets older, I think it kind of takes on a new feeling, smart and precocious. When she is grown, I think it will be kind of a, dare I say it, sexy name.

So there, I stated my case. Can you tell how much I love my daughter's name?

I think that most Americans these days probably associate "Miranda" with one of two contexts: either "Miranda v. Arizona" (as in having one's Miranda rights read), or the character on the show S*x and the City.

Alyssa was quite popular in the US for awhile about a decade ago, because of the popularity of the actress Alyssa Milano. Not so popular just recently.

Better not use Zoe, then either! She's our little dictator, aka "Little Miss Thing", aka "the Princess" (and not disneyfied either!) But, she's so cute, has so much charisma and personality, that everyone can't help but love her. Though we do feel like strangling her on a regular basis, too!

OK so as Im posting this I must admit Ive only read through 15 pages of this thread. I have yet to see anything even closely resembling my name. My mother said she got it out of a baby name book, but Im not too convinced. My name is Carlita pronounced (Carleta)

My sister is Clarissa which is a very old name that was popular in the 1800's.

My three daughters are Tiffany Michelle, Jennifer Leanne, and Mallory Grace.

Imogen which is of Irish and Gaelic origin, and its meaning is "maiden." Also possibly (Latin) "blameless, innocent

I have to admit I've not read through all the postings. My daughter is named Linnea (Lyn nah ah). It's a Swedish name, and was inspired by the botanist Carl Linnaeus who discovered a unique and "shy" flower which then was named Linnea.

I have been substitute teaching the past few days and along with a few others I can't remember, I came across one girl named Diamond and another name that I thought was unique,Miriahjo. The worst part of subbing is mispronouncing names, when I get my first full time job, the kids are saying their names first and I am writing it down phoenitically so my sub teachers have an easier time!!
