Unique Baby Girls names??

When I was preg we told people we were having a girl but never told anyone the name because we liked it and didn't want anyone to take it. There were tons of people we knew preg at the same time.

Isn't that SO crazy?? When we have to become territorial of the names we pick out for our unborn? We/I too am doing that right now!! We have kept the name we have decided on a secret, in fear that someone will "take it" before us! I will freak out if I see it in the birth announcments in the paper before I go into labor! And we are in a small town, so if another child is names that - the chances are pretty good that they will be in school together for the rest of their years! LOL

We named DS3 "Brayden" in Feb 2003 and it was uncommon and a rarity in our area. It was in the babybooks, howeber, it didn't show up on any of the top 20 lists in any of the recent years at that time! Just the other day I saw it as #5 or so on the 2005 name list.... Now we call him Brady just to clarify and be "different" yet again! Funny how that works ... Boy or girl name, its all the same battle!

.... as a child I hated having to tell people how to pronounce it and spell it every time. But in my teens I learned to appreciate its uniqueness.

As for 'unique' first names, I married a man with (coincidentally) a very French first name, though not so unique that it should be difficult to pronounce. Yet many times he has had to correct the spelling or pronunciation; on the plus side, no one ever forgets his name! .

I, too, have a unique first name. Its not Grendalynn as my Dis ID staes, similar however. I was always teased as a little girl and was ask a million times, "Where's Hasel", (I even made up an imaginary friend names Hansel when I was little, it drove my family crazy!!) but I have come to appreciate it! It is very much misprounced and misspelled, and I do not take offence to it. I would constantly be correctling people. Only if its a telemarketer to I get PO'ed - then I correct them and hang up! LOL Its a tell tale sign when the phone rings and they ask if "gre-dell" or "gradle" is available.... LOL

((For the Record: DH's name is a very classic and old fashioned name. Nothing odd. He just happens to be the III and our DS7 is the IV))

Now, naming our children, I have taken extra care to give our children uncommon, but not strange, names. Both of our boys right now are the only ones with their names in the school and town I think.... So far anyway! my husband and I never had to give our last name when calling someone and hope that our children won't either! We like to be known by a single name, Like Cher, Bono or Madonna...

Mine is Lisa, which was SO common in the 60's and 70's, but you hardly ever hear anymore (thank goodness, because I don't like it! LOL)

Acording to the social security website, Lisa was the #1 girls name from 1962 through 1969. There are a lot of Lisas out there!

It's now in the 400's.

She said one of her patients named her daughter Chlamydia. No kidding. Poor kid.

My husband taught middle school in Atlanta, and there was a set of twins: Hawaii and Cadillac. Yep. It's where they were conceived. Ewww.

My brother's daughter is Kaylee, which I like.

It's not crazy. When we had my DS (now 12) and DD (now 7), we kept the pre-chosen names a secret for a couple of reasons. First, I wanted to keep SOMETHING a secret. We did tell everyone what the gender was (ease of gift giving! ), but wanted the names to be a surprise. Second, it avoided getting suggestions from everyone. It was much easier to say, "We've picked out a name and will announce it when the baby comes" than to keep hearing suggestions from all sorts of family members and "helpful" work associates.

When picking names...stick to something you 1) love and 2) means something to you. DD has a Gaelic name. In Boston, we have TONS of kids with Irish names. We wanted an Irish name but since Irish names are so common here...we didn't want her being the 10th Caitlyn or Kailey or Michaela in her class! So we gave her a name that I had only seen when I was living in Ireland. Just be prepared with any unique name- you will have tons of people mispronouncing it

My DD's name is Alexia (Alex-ee-ah) Spring. Spring is my middle name also. We too wanted something different but not strange. We have heard alot of Alexa, Alexandra, Alexis but never Alexia. OK... I read most of the pages and did not see the name "Jori." I knew a girl in high school with this name and have never come across anyone else with that name. I always thought it was really pretty!

Thast's to funny! I coach cheerleading and I had a Jori last year! First one I ever heard of! I also have a Jailene this year! Both are spanish.

Don't know if we're still looking for girl's names ... but well ... I love naming girls. It took me literally nine months to name my daughter. She was named two hours before she was born. Since I was so horrible at it, maybe I'll pass some good luck along.

My daughter's name is Juliette Coryn. Coryn can also be spelled Corin.

While pregnant, I was in LOVE with the name Kendall, but her father didn't like it. He said he thought it was a boy's name. I've met about 8 girls in the past two years with the name of Kendall, but never a boy. UGH!

Those were my top four. Not sure where Juliette came from, but I can tell you ... it's pretty rare *about four babies the past two years in this area*, and it gets TONS of comments. Julia?!?! No, Juliette. Oh ... oh ... OH!, I love that! LOL, it's amusing.

For girls names we liked Carmen, Leela, Lila, Bethany and Skye. I was so convinced I was going to have a baby girl, I barely gave boy's names a second thought until I popped one out

Its interesting to see the different trends in names across the pond. We seem to use American boys name as girls names here!!
My youngest dd is Jaimie Ella Ruby & eldest is Georgia Elaine
My niece is Cody and my friends daughter is Letitia (lateesha).

My girls are named....

Caitrionna (Kay-tree-on-ah).....I have seen variations of this...Caitriona (but how they get Kaw for the Cait is beyond me), also alot of people want to pronounce Caitriona as Kat tree own nah or Kat tree anna hence me adding the additional n in her name to avoid that all together
Aleeah (Ah-lee-ah)....variations on this as well.....Alyah, Aliah
Ameerah (Ah-meer-ah).....variations here too....Amirah, Amira

The other day, I seen a lady named Crayola.....I had to ask if that was her real name like the crayon you color with and she told me....Yes, Yes it was!........I guess you could say it was a very colorful name!

My second choice with both of my daughters was Willow some times I wish that I had just went with it.
