Hey everyone. I read today that a big union (or group of unions) rejected a contract at WDW. It mentioned that about 20,000 full time members and thousands of part time members. Do they ever approach you about joining? Are any of you college programs people in them? And are those in college program considered part time?

Hopefully I can do it when I get old enough!

I don't remember ever being given the option to join the union during traditions or the paper work you have to do at casting.

CPs are considered seasonal status. Therefore, they can NOT be a part of the unions.


--As soon as you tell the union leaders that you are seasonal or a CP they will lose interest and stop talking to you even if you seem interested in what they are trying to do.-- or at least in my experiences.

It depdens on where you work.

As mentioned, Disney Internships and Programs Participants (with the exception of Cultural Representatives) at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida are employed on a Casual Temporary basis and are not covered by nor eligible to join any labour union.

On the other hand, Disney Internships and Programs Participants at the Disneyland Resort in California are employed on a Casual Regular basis. As such, they are required to join and maintain in good standing membership in a labour union in those roles which are subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement between a labour union and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S., Inc. (or with the Walt Disney World Company, it's legal predecessor). Failure to do so may lead to internal discipline as specified in the relevant CBA, up to and including immediate termination.

Another difference is that no one is required to join the unions in WDW because of state laws. California doesn't have that same law.

If you are employed in a role where there is one (which is most of them), yes.

Florida is a Right To Work state, like all of the southern states. Labor Union membership cannot be made a condition of employment in these states. California is notm a Right To Work state, and therefore it can regulate that NOT maintaining membership in good standing in the union (i.e paying your dues) is grounds for immediate termination.

You two seem like you know some stuff about Disneyland? Could any of you please explain what is going on with the union that has been striking? for like three years? I've just read about it, but don't really know much about it.

UNITE HERE Local 11, which represents Cast Members at the Hotels of the Disneyland Resort, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts U.S., Inc. have been engaged in a protracted labour dispute since mid-2008.

Current issues centre on work conditions and participation by Full Time Cast Members in the Company's health insurance plan, as opposed to the previous arrangement, in which the Company paid the Union, which in turn provided fully-subsidised health cover to it's members.

A general strike of affected Cast Members has not occured at this time, nor has one been called for. However, little movement has occured with regards to the negotiations.

I am 100% in favor of workers' rights, and how workers are treated matters very much to me when I decide where to spend my money on vacation or household products or anything else. The fact that Walt Disney was listed in a book about the 100 best companies to work for was a strong influence in my decision to take a Disney vacation after I read it. I am not anti-union for the sake of being anti-union because I think that unions have functioned as a means of keeping management honest so that they don't do things like subtract hours from time records to avoid paying for those hours and other sneaky things like that, which certain companies are so notorious for doing that some supervisors have admitted on video to doing these things.

However, proceed with extreme caution if you should decide to join a union. Some union organizers don't care about their members but only their membership. If you choose to join a union, please attend the meetings and watch over how they spend your dues. I am not speaking against that union, and I am not management at Disneyland or Disney World. I have just seen a lot of what the world can do, especially to people as young and idealistic as many of you. It is okay to let someone get you hook and line but never sinker.

Okay. First off, I couldn't, because I plan on doing the DCP at WDW. Also, even if I could, I don't know that I would.
