Here's the thing, there is no racism against white people. Of course, someone can be a bigot against a white person but racist? No.

Of course, there may be some minor reference to "mental illness", but it isn't top of mind or offered as the primary excuse.

Here, people are bending over backwards to claim "he must be mentally ill."

And, people still want to say "oh no, racism wasn't that big of a deal."

We must accept that racism exists. If this man wasn't racist, would he still have killed? Maybe. But, would he have shot up a church prayer meeting of black folks? Nope.

When a church group full of black people have been mowed down by a white supremacist, it's not really the time to shout BUT WHAT ABOUT RACISM TOWARD WHITE PEOPLE.

Then perhaps a large part of the issue is the quality of our media coverage, which is vitally important to a free society. I can tell you that in the real world where the rubber meets the road it is not true that being black bars a defendant from a mental competency defense, which is not an excuse by the way. I've seen it happen often enough with my own eyes to know that is simply not true.

You know, I honestly can't understand why people are so hung up on these terms & how they're applied. It's as if "thug" has suddenly become the most insulting thing you can call someone. I've got news for you, it isn't. Thug is related to a specific type of behavior that generally (but not always) stops well short of murder. Gang & mafia activity are the crimes of "thugs". And like it or not, most black perpetrated homicides that make the news are gang related. Thus the thug title fits, even if it actually comes up short.

Nobody thinks "terrorist" when it's a Muslim shooter unless it's targeted killing or mass murder. And in those instances, the shoe fits - as it also does with people like McVeigh.

The use of "mentally ill" to describe the lone gunman isn't meant to portray him as some sort of victim. It's to point out the fact that he's a psychopath. This is not "less insulting" than "thug", nor is it intended to be.

While none of us condone thuggery, the motivation behind it is at least somewhat rational.

Where are you seeing that...I dont see anyone denying racism was one of the major factors but this man will be evaluated like any killer to find out if he was just a racist with true evil in his heart and was of sound mind and body when he committed this heinous act. Or was this man who was motivated by racism but was ALSO mentally ill. The experts in that field will determine that just like they do for any murderer.


I am sure people thought the murderers in the DC sniper case were mentally ill and those men were black.

Well, to me those terms are not related to the race, but to the crime.
thug = street level criminal
terrorist = someone with a political agenda
mentally ill - someone who should be getting medical treatment because their reality is skewed

This particular guy, probably a combination of #2 and #3, to me "thug" wouldn't be strong enough.

Disagree. There are "Caucasian perpetrators" arrested, tried, and jailed every day with no mention of being mentally ill. It's just when someone commits a crime so horrific as mass murders of strangers, it is usually the result of something not working right inside their brains.

How about the Washington sniper spree of Muhammad and Malvo? Definite mental illness issues in abundance there.

To speculate that the current case involves mental illness doesn't deny racism exists or that it played a role. It's reasonable to be concerned that combining mental illness and racism is lighting a match where there's gasoline.

Racism exists in every corner of the world. And people of every race can be racist.

This guy is a terrorist as are any members of any white supremacy groups. Probably mentally ill but also a terrorist.

I have often wondered what makes someone hate another so much simply because of the color of their skin, their religion or anything they see on the outside of that person. Sadly I guess its always been. Something we should be able to change, but can we?

The amount of hate this young man has for the black race is in of itself a mental ilillness. His choice to kill could have come from the way he was raised or it could have come from people he chose to associate with or things that may have happened in his life.

When a black man kills, something led him to it. The way he was raised, the people he chooses to associate with or something that happened in his life.

Its no different, it just tends to fall under different labels.

It's not an excuse like the perp is some victim. It's used to describe a crime (and criminal) so horrific no sane person could possibly wrap their head around it. It's someone who is far more evil than someone who is just a thug.

I'm not sure I understand. As sane people, we have to wrap our heads around incidents like this. So we can find a way to explain them to our children, so we can keep them from happening again.

Mental illness shouldn't be used as shorthand for so evil we can't understand- that does a great disservice to the many, many nonviolent people with severe and debilitating mental illnesses.
